Hell, even I got an e-mail earlier today inviting me to an interview for a locally based position, and I haven't really been looking that hard - and I'm pushing 60.

My daughter became unemployed last Friday - the business she has been working at for quite some time now closed the doors and the owners are selling up and retiring. She started in a new job this morning. The new job is not exactly what she wants, but will keep her going until she either grows to like it or finds something better.

The work is out there for those prepared to get off their arse and look for it.
Not so much. I just got another kick in the dick.

After lining up to start with the mob I thought I was talking about, telling them about my requirements for a few days off in the near future to unload my stuff thats still coming from Katherine I got the this immediately after stepping through all the online training and certifcation stuff they required, I was also giving them updates and included the time periods when my gear was due to get here.

Hi David, we can appreciate that you are very busy at the moment getting yourself settled in but we require someone to be able to start this week, which means having you doing the work inductions first for about 3 days, then going with the driving instructor at Toll for about another 3 days, then being assessed by them, then if you pass you will be on the computer for about 8 hours, the whole sequence must be started and completed with no gaps along the way. See how you go but we really need to get someone else up and running this week, so at this time, sorry we can't use you.
In the mean time, my next two most promising job positions I've turned down expecting I had already gained employment when I called back have already been filled.

Good on you Copba, that's kind of what I was getting at earlier.

Yes there are areas where unemployment is terrible.... but for those like you with the drive to find a solution... solutions are out there as you've found.

I hope the work lasts too.... sounds like you deserve it

I'm one of those on the dole at the moment... No dole, no income...

Being lazy, nope.. Have a boss wishing I could go back to work. Had time raising my son til some Dr told DVA that he performed a miracle and all of a sudden I'm cured. 2 years later, cant drive a manual, struggle cleaning the house, struggle walking and my GP removed my drivers medical and freaked out at the MRI she hadnt seen before. But alas, centreblink think I am fine to work still, thus I'm on the dole...

Now for the big bang.. I had an accident 30 years ago while being dressed in green.. Person handling some paperwork for me, freaked out when they read about this accident.. Now I have learned that I am actually no longer a statistic, as there is no one that has lived this long with the injury I received while dressed in green and the best bit, there is only one Dr in this state that has the training to deal with me. So of course, as no one else can give centreblink a solution to what is wrong, i can only get the dole. and with that, i'm required to work. now this injury, requires me not to get stressed, push by body in any way, etc etc... oops sorry centreblink but that is exactly what you are doing..

I was informed today that my case is going to be worst case dealt with by the person handling it, and it will be his last. Probably be in the news next year..

So right now, i'm a dole bludger. the system is a nightmare and impossible to deal with. We have issues in the country with lack of employees. My son at 16 was superspreading, driving a truck. He also would help around the yard and was capable of assembling my roadtrain and driving it around sheds without hitting them. He has never had a problem getting work. But he is an exception and in the country. In the city, there is limited work, and the system does not promote people moving to the country.. So we lose either way...

Wraithe , you are most definitely not a dole bludger, but have been totally stuffed around by the system.
I'm sure there are people on here who would know how to better manage your situation with adf and centerstink.
My grandfather used to help other ww2 vets navigate the b.s and hoops to get better results ( both medical and pension wise) with less stress, but he passed away 3 years ago.
    Take care.

Unfortunately those on welfare are the easy target and are being used as a diversion so we don't focus on the real issue.
Current "crackdown " will save $2 billion over 4 years or $500 million a year. Wow , but hang on isn't the budget going to cop a massive hit via the proposed $50billon tax cut for big business?
And as much as I hate to repeat myself, didnt the papers owner that trumpet this **** get a tax refund in 1 year that was almost double the saving from the crackdown and since then paid no tax?

Look those saying it is easy to get a job are full of crap and generally been lucky as well, right profession or right place right time. While I have not got as far as receiving the dole since being made redundant 2 1/2 years ago I have only had casual work (have been offered several jobs that were residential in remote WA or interstate so not viable at this stage), I have registered with Centrelink some time ago and may have to again soon. Casual work is not adequate no matter what some of you say, it sucks and is demoralizing. There have been a couple of other offers that have fallen through due to mine sites closing down.
My wife also lost her job about 4 weeks ago due to the business she worked for going into liquidation. She has applied for about 40 jobs since then and only had 2 interviews.
And we certainly are not the worst off, I know quite a few people out of work and highly skilled struggling to get gainful employment and it is getting worse not better. WA's economy has basically collapsed.
Not everyone on the dole or looking for work unsuccessful are bludgers and to say they are is disgraceful, yes there are some that dont want to work, but a lot that do.
Then there is youth unemployment that is just atrocious. So sick of people telling my daughter its easy to get a job with her study. She has applied for hundreds of part time jobs and received replies from maybe 3. No one is interested in training junior staff any more, let alone apprenticeships or traineeships.
The Peel area now has the highest youth and female unemployment in the country and I wish we had never moved here sometimes.
There are so many jobs taken by 457 and tourist visa's. Every second establishment you walk into around here has these workers, nothing against them but this should only happen when residents do not take jobs.
So maybe some of you should get all your facts right before acting all high and mighty and telling everyone else how easy it is to get a job.
Yes there are jobs out there, but not always as easy as you say.
Then there is also the issue of minimum wage which can be a joke for some as it is barely more than the dole and no incentive to work, especially if the work is not local.

    Wraithe and Craig,

On reading your posts i realised how general my comments in this thread have been. I definitely do not have an issue with people who are in need, and apologise to the both of you, and anyone else in similar situaions, if my posts were interpreted that way.

I think, like many people, i am frustrated that people like yourselves seem to be forgotten about while others take advantage of the system.

All the best to both of you.

    Dan

You clearly don't get it Craig. It is clear you don't want to work. You and your wife should relocate to FNQ or NT and go fruit picking.

(I case it isn't already obvious, this is a joke. But this is the way many of the crowd that are quick to call others dole bludgers would think).

To put this on a lighter note.

A while ago I was by my choice between contracts and looking for some evening work to get me out of the house. Evenings worked as would not need to pay someone to look after the kids. Minimum wage is less than child care costs for 2 kids.

Applied to local supermarket to stack shelves. There were 2 of us there filling in the forms. The other bloke was having difficulty with the questions so having finished mine I helped him fill in the forms.

Never heard anything more from the supermarket. Had thought I should at least have an interview as I share the same surname as the supermarket chain which is named after the owner who just happens to live just outside the village. No luck with that thought process.

A few weeks later was speaking to one of my neighbours who was telling me a story about a friend of his who was excited as now had a job stacking shelves at the local supermarket. He had been out of work for some time and always had trouble answering the questions to fill in the application forms. Seems someone had helped him fill in the application forms which had made the difference.
