I have one of the Schrader spark plug pumps but I've never tried it.

Doubtful unless the engine is fuel injected. Air is drawn in via a reed valve in the device therefore petrol vapour won't be in the cylinder.

I know Cuppa. Bloody disgraceful ain't it?

Was in Paris one year having breakfast at a shared table with an American, who believed Australia was on the Continent next to Switzerland. NOT AUSTRIA YOU FOOL! No wonder many of them travel a lot as they would have plenty of School Holidays while not learning Geography.

Then I was lectured behind an open hand about Australians eating part of our Coat of Arms. They only know half the story. I wonder how many Bald Eagles get done?

We used them extensively in the Simpson in 1965-6; all petrol vehicles and 12v compressors did not exist.

You do not get significant amounts of petrol vapour - there is a spring loaded valve to let air in, and with the throttle closed you will mostly fill the cylinder via this valve, as there is less resistance than from the closed throttle - there is a pretty good vacuum in the inlet manifold, so an open valve direct to the air compared to tying to get a breath past the closed throttle....

The biggest drawback is that it is getting unfiltered air. If you are using oil, some will get into the tyres, but not much, again, as there will be less vacuum to suck oil down the valve stems or up past the rings.

    Glad you asked, Ian.

Never seen one, never handled one, but just what I was told. Maybe it was a very early one or it was buggered?

I'm not going to dig the bloke up to ask him. That would be a bit rude after all the trouble his family went to, in putting him under.

That's what I do on the 300TDi. Course, I only need five.
