4Bee,what about a Fridgies ratchet?

Always losing the bloody things

I still paint them with primer then pink road marking paint,but they still seem to vanish.

Must have lost nearly as many as 10mm sockets,or even 1/4 whitworth sockets in the day...

Might be showing my age as well by saying I’ve lost quite a few 2BA nut spinners in my time as well. Most people look at me with a dumb look on their face when I mention that.

Yes lost a few of those as well over the years,the boys wouldnt know what they are

There were a few other sizes as well,we used to use, tube sockets i think we used to call them,cant remember?Maybe tube spanners?

Always used them on motor/compressor terminal blocks.

I've still got an assortment of British Standard spanners in my toolbox. I made my own tube spanner by welding an 1 ¹/⁸th socket to the end of 300 mm of heavy wall pipe, handy for truck wheel nuts.
IIRC, early model Holdens were supplied with a tube spanner, one end for the wheel nuts, the other for the spark plugs.

What an option!

Yep, motor connections mainly - working as a Sparky in a Power Station meant you were always changing a motor on something - a daily occurrence. Back then we even did contactor maintenance where we’d pull them apart, clean and calibrate the contacts as well. Then there were the commutators to clean on the DC motors, etc…. Damn I feel old all of a sudden and I’m really not even close, just had the pleasure/misfortune to work on gear built in the 50’s when I was younger and it was old then.

You made them too Bower Bird attractive I reckon. Pink Spanners? Maybe the Roads & Highways folk spotted those & thought " They'd look nice in my toolbox"


Yep & screwdrivers, plus those dadblamed noo fangled Open Tube nut spanners (& that is just in the ceiling especially if it is insulated with Insul-fibre type blown in crap). Drop summat into that & it is really, really gone. You can spend the rest of the day searching with your hand & then give up as there are not enough hours in the day.

You'd have more luck finding MH370.


Then, it isn't too bad when one stumbles across cable strippers & leads etc & misc stuff that other trades have also lost up there.


They say, "It is money that makes the world go around. " Be buggered it is, it is the lost Tradie's tools that does that.

We used to do contactor maintenance on the big and not so big gear as well,many had those old lift up contactors,and those big ones that pulled in at an angle,if you know what i mean.

I am now feeling older than i really am,and thats OLD
