Whilst I appreciate a throaty exhaust, these days I prefer them on other blokes' jiggers.![]()
The best sounding V8 was the Mack... 400 and up...
Now they had a note of there own...
Any diesel pulling hard up a hill can sound good, even a screaming Gimmy...

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

'The more the smoke, the more the poke!!'
I've been told that Scania used to cast Mack's V8 blocks for them.

Nope...
Simular looking but not the same...
Interesting when you hear people say one was a copy of the other...
Design teams had experience in both worlds but the engines where built seperately... But remember, both where looking at good combinations of power and torque and the 375 hp V8 Mack was around before hand to learn from...
Also other V8's had been proven in certain ways and functions...
Both resulted in good engines and you could make both sound nice but I think the Mack got the best result in the end...
One thing I do miss now I cant work, is the feel of a diesel pulling hard... All 6's and 8's when going into the torque band, have a beautiful feel about them...
I am old school and work my engines down to near maximum torque and thats when you sort the boys from the girls...
My last boss thought i was going to blow up the truck I drove(He called it the Lemon, I loved it), DD14 Pulling down to 1275 rpm, that thing had a note all of its own and when you can drag 88 tonne through the hills from "The Lakes" to Northam and kick the arse of a Cummins Sig, you earn the right to bragg.... The old truck was still going 6 months ago when I visited, and the guy driving was told to drive like I did.. I spose the fact I wore parts out but didnt kill it may have helped... He did buy me a new toy 6 months before I had to retire, but that was only a pussy CAT C15(they are impressive engines)...
