I'm afraid we use common sense to maintain consistency..
I know that daylight saving has genuine disadvantages for some people, however the argument about leaving time as nature intended and the argument about consistency are considerable weakened if you check sunrise and sunset times across WA.

This morning the sun rose at 5:35 in Esperance, 5:37 in Broome and 6:00 in Perth.

It will set at 5:52in Esperance, 5:48 in Broome and 6:16 in Perth.

Much greater inconsistency can be seen if you compare summer and winter in those places.

In Esperance, thesun rises as early as 4:38 and as late as 6:57.

In Broome, it varies from 5:12 to 6:21, and in Perth from 5:07 to 7:17.

Summer and winter sunset times for those same three locations show similar variation.

So depending on your location and the time of year, the sun in WA might rise anywhere between 4:38 and 7:17.

Those variations are greater than the one hour change involved in daylight saving.

Daylight saving doesn’t suit everyone and there are valid arguments against it, but the argument about consistency in not very convincing.

The data comes from this site.

Of WA's 2.6 million people just over 2 million live in Perth and the vast majority live in the South West So the sunrise and set times that apply for Perth would be applied for the vast majority of WA's population.
The variance of the times for other towns like Esperance, Kununurra etc. is pretty irrelevant when it comes down to the number of votes cast in a referendum.

Dont forget , That perth is longitude 115.31 East and WA time is based on GMT + 8 at Longitude 120 East, Kalgoorlie , the border is approx Longitude 128 east , pretty big state WA . Add that to your sunrise and sunset calcs .

I don't understand why anything needs to be added to the calculations. Those differences in longitude are the reason the differences in time exist in the first place. The differences are so big because WA is so big.

Opponents of daylight saving sometimes present their case as if WA sunrise and sunset times are the same for all of the state and that it suits everyone. Yet I seem to remember that when I was in Kununurra several years ago that some people found that being stuck in the same time zone as Perth created some inconvenience.

I am surprised that given how big WA is, that it is all one time zone. Some places adopt a more realistic approach. I believe that Broken Hill, in NSW, still operates on "Adelaide time".

Tell the people in Adelaide that they have to work on Melbourne time and see what they say , Perth has 22 mins of daylight saving by default due to the standard WA Time , add another hr and that is now and 1hour and 22 mins daylight saving .

By the way Kununurra is no more inconvenienced than Perth as they are both east and west of 120 long , they start ealier and Perth states latter than true or local sunrise , thats why daylight saving in WA sucks . Except for the L,arte Mob in perth .

    Back to the original topic.

I am puzzled by the declaration quite a few people are making. (Not here.)

They say, " I was going to vote x or y, but because I got a text message/ had door knock/ some other tactic, I am going to vote the other way."

So their vote is determined by the tactics of a section of one side or the other rather than by the actual merits of each side's argument.

The issue has remained the same, but they claim they are going to vote differently because of something unrelated to the substance of the issue.

The tactics of the advocates of either side don't change the merits of the issue.

I have good friends Both Gay and Lesbians, living in harmonious same sex de facto marriages, some with Children. They function exactly as any other marriage does. They had no choice when they were allocated their sexuality, sex, skin colour, hight, weight, metabolic rate or IQ. Discrimination on any grounds is ridiculous and just plain wrong. Having this plebiscite is wrong also because it asks us to determine weather Gays and Lesbians should have the rights the rest of us have, when in fact they should have those rights by virtue of being Human and therefor, not for us to determine.
Daylight saving has no effect on me at all.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
