I say this with the greatest respect to you personally.

*Your comment as a general comment people make is naive to believe there will be no internal combustion engines in vehicles in 5 years.
*At some point if large corporations that manufacture combustion engines in vehicles stop making them in favour of electric powered cars, apart from profit making what benefit will it make for people and the planet?

*While your electric toothbrush or car is being re-charged via a grid being powered by a coal fired power station, its nothing more than blind consumer ignorance that somehow you are doing the right thing by driving an electric car.

*People as consumers need to wake up and open their eyes, do some research into the horrific waste that comes from a coal fired power station, namely coal ash.
*Research / Google "coal ash" and its effects on human health and the environment.
*While you are at it, to kill off another warm fuzzy feeling people get, look into the total lack of recycling that happens in Australia, most of your "recyclables" end up in land fill. Glass in Australia hasnt been recycled for many many years.

Why do critics of EVs insist that the only source of energy now and in the future to recharge is from coal fired power stations?

Coal is dying, and existing worn out coal power stations will be replaced by renewables or gas. It's already happening. Coal stations can't be financed because lenders won't put their money into them because renewables are already cheaper than coal.

Even if Base Load electricity continues to be generated from Coal, (which it wont) the net effect of EV construction and use still produces magnitudes lower emissions than continuing with ICE vehicles.

*Light vehicles (ICE) in Australia account for what percentage of our (Australia's) emissions?
*medium/heavy vehicles (20 year old as older trucks used for port to distribution) in Australia account for what percentage.
*Coal fired power stations account for what percentage.
*Exporting coal accounts for what percentage.
*So out of all the above, the focus is on the smallest emissions generation.
*It makes no sense, its the next blind consumer fad, just like bottled water and owning a turbo diesel vehicle. (both of which are to the detriment of peoples health and the environment).

*And I put this part out on a line by itself in the hope people as consumers may just stop for a minute and think about this.
*The human and environmental cost of mining precious/rare metals.

and the two car companies in that article.... Ford and GM, both on the lowest of the car manufacturers for quality, sales, customer service and support and any form of ethical behavior towards consumers (personal opinion).

I would assume the top of quality manufacturers such as Toyota and Hyundai it would be a different experience.

I also doubt that ICE cars will be gone in 5 years, it'll be a while longer than that. That said, the writing is on the wall for them. As it also is for coal generation - I used to work in project finance and even 15 years ago there was a lot of talk about stranded assets - that is, that coal assets would within a relatively short timeframe be worthless and the money invested in them "stranded". Had you wondered why Adani can't get commercial finance for their coal mine in Queensland? It's not just that it doesn't even meet the soft standards the Chinese development agencies adopt in terms of environmental impact, at a very basic level the numbers simply don't add up. And on top of that, the assets they are trying to borrow to build will be worthless, and that's sooner rather than later.
