    Read an article somewhere recently about how bores in WA are pulling salt water further and further inland. I think the logic was as bores close to the coast drained the fresh water, salt moved in so those bores became salty. Dig more bores further inland, salt follows.

    Yes, similarly on islands in the Pacific the small atols support a "fresh water lens" that floats above the sea water table. Once you drain the lens too much the sea water breaks through and goodbye to the island's fresh water.

    I suppose if the desal is used to top up the fresh water supplies, what is to be done with the concentrated left over brine , or will it be dumped at sea , and therefore increase the salt levels in that area of the ocean , and worry about that the effects later ?
