Over the years, going back to at least the 1940s, there have been a number of scientific tests of divining for water, and none have been able to show any better results than chance. It helps that in most places you will get water just about anywhere. Hydrologists have a slightly better success rate than diviners - something like 92% compared to 85% in a paper covering about 3,600 bores, published by the NSW Water Resources Commission about thirty years ago.
For a number of years there was a large sum of money offered for anyone who could divine the location of water pipes in a test setup in Sydney. Although several people tried it, the money was never claimed.
People like the driller in this article, with very wide experience have developed a depth of knowledge of where the best spots are, and very likely this unconsciously affects their divining.
