The Alchemy of Air, by Thomas Hager

More than 150 years ago "Guano Islands Act stated that any guano islands unclaimed or unoccupied by others could be claimed and mined, and the guano delivered to the United States at a low price for the benefit of its citizens. This act authorized our nation's earliest significant annexations of lands beyond the continent."

My reading last night on loads of poo and Mr Haber - Mr Bosch took me to the fertilizer wars. WW1, WW2 and all over poo not being enough to feed us all ( when there was a LOT less of us)

Spain butt kicked by two South American countries ( as was America)

Who would have thought a load of bird poo would create US laws that are still active today and 96 islands the used those laws for mostly still in US hands

Great reading. Almost tempted to skip work to finish it

Covid consumes precisely ZERO% of my time. Right up there with climate change.

Yes, I did not mention Nauru, because it is no longer Australian territory.

Germany WW1. Mr Fritz Haber was a interesting chap 1918 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for ammonia the Haber Bosch process which honesty feeds the world now. Infamous some not nice ways- he is also considered the father of Chemical Warfare. Not a achievement to be proud of I feel.

It never was, it was administered by a UN trusteeship after WWII, with Aus, NZ and the UK being the trustees. Aus did most of the admin, not very well apparently, as Nauru filed a complaint against us, which we lost.
Prior to WWII, and during it, Nauru was squabbled over by Germany, Britain, Japan etc., for strategic reasons, as well as the phosphate.
    Nauru gained independence in 1966.
