This one may or may not be trivial. My rehab is riding. Low impact and loving it. Garmin is both my watch and also my go to nav tool back packing. Bet a few of us have one.

A Server Down for maintenance for the last few days had me wondering. A ransom ware attack seem to the issue for garmin servers and interestingly their call centres.

I did not know some pilots need it. They do. Garmin Fly is a tool and offline as well.

Commonsense and a map or two, maybe even a compass has never failed me on my own in the middle of whoop whoop, even with no mob reception that I don't rely on anyway.

Cloud, fog or nothing to use a compass has once or twice made it a little tricky. Once time in WA sharing map and compass based navigation got me to a pub not to where the actual place I was supposed to be was

I got clouded in a couple of times, once up high, once on the flatlands in ti-tree.

Dunno what it was, but I got back to within 100m of the POS both times from many kms away.

That was when I got a compass as a failsafe, but I've still never used it.

I've noticed with other people that the more they rely on 'aids' the more they need them with navigation, etc.

Yep, topographical maps and the art of knowing which way is up, a disappearing skill set. I am in a situation where I have to ask young people at least a few times a year whether they can read and understand a topo map and know about magnetic declination and whether they can set up magnetic declination on a compass.

It is a skill set that is reduced markedly over the years since phone apps and hand held GPS.

I learned the use of topographic maps as a teen in the army cadets - and constructed them in first year surveying at uni, and honed my skills in work since.
