Consumer groups have for years been calling on companies to allow their customers to be able to fix everything from smartphones to tractors.

Autonomous driving in the Paddock "Farm equipment maker John Deere has unveiled its first automated tractor that can till a field without a driver.

The heavy-duty machine can be activated by smartphone, using cameras and sensors to navigate farmland.

Instead of being a new machine, the automated functions are a kit that can be added to some existing tractors.

But John Deere said it has not decided if it will sell the kit directly - and is considering a lease or subscription model.

So now John Deere say you can fix the tractors you own, yourself. That's good but I think they say this now only because under a future subscription business model you probably won't be owning anything to fix yourself.

Well at least the 'radical activists' (the farmers) had a win in the US.

The leasing side of things is a good deal for some people. I'm sure there are a lot of D3 / 4 owners who'd be streets ahead financially now if they'd leased.

    cheers, DL

It's rumoured that  are considering the subscription model, for iPhones at first. While I've been a  user for 25 years I trust their current motives in the same way I trust the WEF. I can't imagine John Deere have chosen this path in order to lose money.
