Often happy to run or walk at the speed of the person I am beside Homestar. Just moving rocks my world. Races are purely for my own Personal Bests. Many of my favorite marathon or significantly lesser distances walk. If your taking the jag I want the spare seat

My theory is genetics Couch Potato or hard working/sports types may get knee/hip issues if mum and dad or gran and pop got knee/hip issues younger than 80 years old.
The other interesting research is moving even if impacted by arthritis and dodgy hips/knees reducing the impacts of those injuries. Being in a Rehabilitation hospital for a month with hundreds of 60-70-80-90 and even older showed me some people who recovered really well from the new knees or hips and sadly to many how had allowed there physically fitness to deteriorate so much they had significant trouble standing up from a chair.

Climbing ladders is very bad for the knees,I have definitely done my fair share of that, some days years ago we worked off ladders for days.

I do know a few that have had knee replacements, and once things have settled down, there is initially quite a bit of pain, most seem to say they should have had them done years ago.
    Same for hips.

I might be wrong but in running running up hills it is almost impossible to cause issues. Running down puts a lot of extra shock loading load on joints. Taking the slow way down works really well for a ladder and running

Yes,bad knees hate even walking down hill☹️

Doing laps in a large pool is also fantastic exercise, doesn't shock the joints

Certainly gets the heart rate up.

But i find it bloody boring.

i would rather walk through the bush with the dog all day.

In fact today i have done over 16 000.

The down side my knees are now shagged.

Oh well ,i suppose things could be worse.

Bloody oath they could be. How are you in the Erection Dept?

My theory is that we are all given just so many heart beats Why bugger up the averages by doing physical stuff?

Jogging & cycling seems to be a Health Hazard. Look how many Joggers & Cyclists get bowled arse over tit on the roads.

Met both the elderly couch potatoes and sprightly types by the bucket load at the rehabilitation hospital with me. Hips and Knee replacements, heart attacks and strokes mostly. The sprightly types up and walking out the door in about a week. The couch potatoes stayed with me for a month and looked very unstable still. Many of the couch potatoes had return visits and were often younger than the sprightly types. A 104 year old came for her work out for her birthday. She put a lot of 70-80 year olds to shame

Agree with this - have seen my Mum (mid 70’s) have both a major back op and new hip in the last 2 years - she’s always been active and quite fit for her age - can walk 18 holes of Golf 3 times a week type.

She commented on how long it took some people - some 15 to 20 years younger - to recover to the same point and I could see what she meant - all couch potatoes. She was in and out of Physio and back to normal very quickly with the hip and the back being so major took a little while longer but her Surgeon commented that she recovered very quickly from this too.

It’s one of the the things I’ve seen that make me know I have to do something sooner rather than later and my knee injury I’m getting over now makes me want to more than ever. Had a good walk today - a bit slower than normal but a decent distance and everything feels good tonight so happy about that. It’s when I’m not using it - like driving for an hour to a site, etc and I get out of the car - that I really feel it. Moving it hurts me less than not moving it.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Exercise is dangerous. People get injured all the time while exercising. It's much safer to be a couch potato.

Yep, provided some smart arse hasn't busted the arm rests by sitting their lardy overweight arse on them.

I had a Major Op a few years ago & when the Sturgeon came in on his rounds I was apparently faffing around with the curtains, "doing the laundry" he said, but was amazed to see me up & about in the room. Actually, it was the same time I had my Pressure Socks dumped in the bin. as mentioned in another post. Operations, a piece of ****. same as Anaesthetics but I guess I will get my " comeuppance" one day.

I had quad by-pass in 2001 and did my daily 3klm walk with the aid of a walking stick,it nearly killed me the first couple of weeks but it got easier,I then went back to doing my usual daily tasks, like walking behind the Victa mowing 3/4 an acre to fully regain fitness, but in 2016 had a slight stroke, that slowed me down,I walk a lot slower now but still drive, eye sight is not effected,so I can still drive vehicles up to HR,but given the motorcycle up,I just keep my weight down, and stick to a couple of scotches a week

    cheers
