I have to make a 120km round trip tomorrow to get stitches out of my leg where the skin bloke took a sample. And back in a week's time to get another bit cut off now he has the pathology of the sample.

This is the result of my regular skin inspection three weeks ago. He found a suspicious spot and took a sample, closing the wound with three stitches. These now have to come out, and then next week the whole spot will be cut out.

I don't know for sure what it is, as I have not seen the pathology report, but when he took the sample he said he thought it was a SCC. It is on the inside of my left leg, between the top of my boot and the top of my sock.

I tend to be very careful of my skin - my father died from melanoma (five years younger than my current age). I had a major operation twenty years ago to remove most of my right ear and the lymphatic system on the right side of my neck, and have since had two unrelated melanomas removed from my back and right thigh.

In the last twenty years treatment for melanoma has improved dramatically. Twenty years ago, for melanoma which has metastasised (spread from the original site) five year survival rate was around 5%. Today, it is, I believe, a bit over 50%. But early detection and surgery remains the key to avoiding prolonged treatment.

I'm of a fair complexion and need to stay on top of checkups. It's a good reminder for me and many others no doubt.

When my wife was diagnosed with liver cancer, after years of avoiding getting check ups ( Hep C could possibly have been detected ) I decided to not ignore the docs. Even through the alco days I used to get tested. And yet they found my breast cancer by a fluke. Checkups, and self examination, are vital I reckon. If I had detected the lump earlier I might have avoided the metastasis into my lymph nodes under my arm and not have to had them removed. And, because the cancer got into my lymph system they worry it will return elsewhere. So yes, James, keep up with the checkups. I have a life of drugs and tests ahead for who knows how long.

Hence my comment of a new thread. Australia is universally regarded as 'Skin Cancer Central'. I know of people who have regular, 12 month checks, but in my experience, that was way too long an interval. Even 6 months was too long! I'm on 3 month visits and sticking to it!

Got the stitches out today and saw the pathology. It is a SCC, and he did not get it all, hence the return trip next week. And then presumably back a fortnight later to get more stitches out.

Hope it's all sorted JD. I visit a dermatologist every year. Several years of ocean time frequently in just Shorts and sandals and add skipping Winters for Northern Naval Deployments for years of continuous summers has a lot of my mates having bits cut out far too often! Sun Screens, Hats and long sleeve shirts and eternal vigilance

I have had hundreds off over the years,i now need one cut off my nose..The biopsy came back not good,so needs to go.
Has to be done by a plastic surgeon,in hospital.Still waiting for his quote,no doubt it will be eye watering,although we do have private cover.
The good thing is it can be removed,then checked immediately to see if all of it has been cut out,which saves going through the whole process again if all of it has not been removed.

He also biopsied two on my lip,they came back fine,which was good.
Compared with my usual guy this guy uses needles that hardly hurt,and the area goes numb almost immediately.
But vastly more expensive than my usual guy......

While he does heaps of skin cancer removals,his main income is Boob jobs,Tummy tucks,collagen in the lips and on it goes.

Like Saitch said,i go every 3 months,not 6 or 12 like many,get them early is the go.
