He was driving down Parramatta Rd in his 1920s Austin 7, when he hit the bump of the first rail, the front end of the torque tube came off the back of the gearbox (I assume all the nuts had fallen off) and the front end of the tube dropped on the road - needless to say, when it hit the second rail, it stopped. So did the car. So did my cousin - when his hat hit the top rail of the windscreen. Didn't seem to do much damage to him though (probably not going very fast). He tied the torque tube up with some string, pushed it off the crossing, found some nuts, put it back together and continued on to our place at North Rocks!

I think of this incident every time I think of that crossing.
The delightful rubberised fabric u-joint. Just as well the early 7's only produced 10.5 horsepower.

    Hi,
Similar to our 1950 Simcar, ruberised fabric connecting either end of the driveshaft.
    Cheers

Austin was a fairly early user of these, but these rubber U-joints were quite common in the pre WW2 era. Not only on prop shafts - I have seen them on auxiliary drives as well. My father's Swift used them on the drive shaft, and it would have been about twice the power of the Austin Seven.

Before the availability of reasonably cheap cross and bearing U-joints with needle rollers, universal joints were a real problem. Probably one of the factors that made torque tube transmissions popular, as they allowed a totally enclosed joint that could be lubricated from the gerbox. Ford T for example had a 'ring and two tees' setup, with steel on steel bearings, if my memory is correct.

I'm GRUMPY at the people running the Covid19 isolation thing!
I manage (or mismanage) a remote business, part of running this business is that we accumulate cash money, lots of it.
When things are normal I would take some money with me when visiting SWMBO or doing other stuff in Mt Isa & bank it. This would be every month or so if not more often.
So, Doomadgee has been in basically total lock down for 2 months & I had not banked for a few weeks in the lead up to the lock down.
I spent 2 days filling in various forms, making phone calls, going to council, getting a letter from my boss & sending it all off to get permission to go to Cloncurry, do the banking & getting the Roadhouse Ute's recall done.

    Permission REFUSED!!
The reason? Because I would have to take the 3 kids who I have (SWMBO has the rest) & they are not considered an Essential Service Provider!
    What The?
What the hell am I supposed to do with the kids? Leave them home alone? Yes I could farm them out to relatives short term but to do this I have to get permission from Child Safety which takes some time & is unlikely to be granted as the kids are with us for very good reasons.

To say I was slightly ****ed off would be an understatement! There are no reported cases of Covid19 in all of NWQ. I would be staying with SWMBO (who, by the way, can travel Cloncurry to Mt Isa freely) & I really don't want a large quantity of cash on the premises!
This is not to mention I will not get to see SWMBO or the kids in Curry.
Slightly less important I can't have a drink.

    Bloody Idiots!!
Anyway, new plan has been done, hopefully it will get past those with "Little Person Syndrome".

    Rant over.

    This may be easier.

I could do a road trip up there,as the trip could be “work” related.

I would be happy to take the cash, therefore relieving you of your problem.

It would be nice to once again help out another AULROion.
