I think you're missing my point - Qld is free to control coronavirus by restricting movement across its borders but it's not free to do so in a way that discriminates on the basis of residence. There can't be one rule for those deemed to be Qld residents and another for those deemed to be not residents.

And it should be before the courts but the Cth has run soft on it. And I'm not sure what you mean by the reference to Clive Palmer - as far as I'm aware his action is still on foot.

But it's telling that the responses to my post have been around State-based chauvinism. I'd always thought that we were one country and the banter about mexicans and banana-benders was just good natured banter, but apparently not.

As I've posted before, there's growing anger in Melbourne about the way we've been treated by the rest of the country and there was an article in yesterday's Age that actually referred to irreparable damage to the Federation.

I think that you're also missing the point. The issue is that the border controls, as currently executed, are arguably illegal. Are there any other parts of the Constitution that you would also like to jettison?

And, as has been pointed out to you before ad nauseam, Victorians were doing the right thing, but it got out. Largely because Sydney and Melbourne were doing the quarantine work for WA, and SA and Tas.

There is currently almost zero transmission in Melbourne at a community level - almost all of the daily figures are nursing homes or health workers.

But you are proving my point about State-based chauvinism. Frankly, at this point in time if WA asked to secede I'd happily vote for it.

I don't know where you got that but it's .... not correct. I don't know where you got those figures but I presume that they have some kind of political slant - presumably about how education standards are declining etc etc.

Academics agree that Shakespeare had a vocab of about 17,000 - 20,000 words and not the higher figures that are routinely bruited about. And that contrary to the myths, he wasn't that unusual at the time, for playwrights in any case. But I doubt that the average person then had twice the vocab of a playwright.

You have 4,000 words by the time you're a toddler. As an adult the standard range now is about the same as Shakespeare.

Keep in mind that there's a difference between spoken and written language and there's typically a smaller range of words used in conversation than in writing.

For most of the last 120 years WA has been subsidised by the Eastern States.

WA only joined later on the basis that it got its own way with tariffs and largely because Kalgoorlie wanted to join the Federation separately. WA also voted to leave in the 1930s, notwithstanding that there's not a process for that in the Constitution (notice the word "indissoluble"?). So they asked the Brits, who refused to permit it.

VIC hasn't received any overseas travellers now for months so they can't harp on about WA not pulling its weight..
In the time tha VIC hasnt received any overseas people WA has received and quarantined thousands of people without the fiasco with infection from the quarantine breakouts in Melbourne.[biggrin]

Since the WA mining boom in the 60/70's WA has been tbe bread basket of Aus.
So what amazing things has VIC done for the Australian economy in the last 50/60 years??

The Constitution makes states responsible for public health, which is why the states run public hospitals.
The border controls are under Public Health Acts, to limit the movement of diseases, just like controls on the movement of livestock and fruit. There is no legal doubt the states have the power to control public health.
The rule about requiring areas to go 28 days without untested community transmission to cease being regarded as a hot-spot is well-established and is being applied by Qld, WA, NZ and others.
The attempts to undermine the border controls are worded to claim the controls are being based on reasons other than public health. They are unproven.
