A look at Asia, Philippines and Indonesia out of control, the rest doing better.

"As a whole, Southeast Asia’s 11 countries have done relatively well in containing the virus. With a population of 655 million, the region reports about 820,000 cases. That is fewer than either California or Texas, which have much smaller populations, although both states have significantly higher testing rates.

Vietnam and Thailand have led the way, and neither country has reported a case of local transmission in weeks. Between them, they report fewer than 4,800 cases and only 94 deaths since the pandemic began."

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

If third world countries like Vietnam and Thailand with their lower standard health services can do this then what on earth is going on in VIC and NSW ??

My guess is after doing a lot of travel through the Asian region is that they have a totally more independent culture & are not as pampered as much as we are in Oz . IMHO I think we have just had it too good for too long in Oz and have come to the expectation that everything should be done for us and are not sure of what hard times are anymore .

I feel that this , virus is going to be a game changer in how we live in the future, and we should be preparing for how we are going to deal with it for the long haul not worrying about how we are doing it tough & not being able to travel & go on Holidays interstate etc. we seem to be focused on how we can enjoy life now and hang in there for a vaccine that may or may not come to fruition .

Interestingly in Thailand and Vietnam (as with many Asian countries) it was pretty normal for the locals to always wear a face mask when outdoors long before COVID. Laos is another country with next to no reported cases.

The level of reporting in Vietnam and Laos may be questionable, but knowing plenty of people in both countries the results do appear to be mostly legit.

High humidity may be one favourable condition - but maybe the issue is westerners are just super spreaders of germs with low levels of natural immunity to bugs like the flu and coronavirus.

But the sad reality is in countries like Vietnam life expectancy is relatively low and death rates from other diseases remains very high - very much like that experienced by Australia’s indigenous people.

I hope when this is all over we invest as much effort and funding into closing the gap for Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. To do otherwise would be hypocritical.

It's also not really accurate to label these countries "Third World" - developing maybe.

    Yet another **** up

NSW allowed visitors in from NZ - and 17 of them promptly boarded a domestic flight to Melbourne and disappeared once they arrived.

No-one in Victoria knew that they were coming here. Victoria is closed to international arrivals and isn't part of the travel bubble. Tullamarine is Federal land so VicPol couldn't intervene. Border Farce and the Federal Police did nothing and are now saying it's a State responsibility. Supposedly the passengers had been in NZ for at least a fortnight but that wasn't independently checked in NSW, the same way that they didn't check that people getting off the Ruby Princess weren't from overseas. Border Farce still haven't provided the entry cards to the Victorian government so there's no idea who these people are, where they are or why they came here. There's a chance that they're not even New Zealanders, but Australians or others who've taken the chance to sneak back in.

And all this on the day that we had just one infection reported and zero deaths.

Here we go again, with a NSW / Border Force created outbreak.

New Zealand travellers who flew to Melbourne via Sydney still in Victoria, authorities say - ABC News

Coronavirus Australia live news: Daniel Andrews waiting on Border Force to hand over New Zealand travellers''' passenger cards, Victoria reports one new COVID-19 case - ABC News

"Victoria has not agreed to a travel bubble arrangement with New Zealand and did not expect to receive international travellers as a result of NSW making that arrangement," DHHS said.
"The Victorian Government has made it clear to the Commonwealth that we expect NZ passengers who have not undertaken quarantine will not be permitted to board flights in Sydney bound for Melbourne."

    Edit:

NZ press are reporting that the 17 entered Melbourne to visit family:

"The passengers are reported to have flown into Sydney under a new travel bubble with New Zealand and then taken a connecting flight to visit family in the state of Victoria."

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/travel-bubble-bursts-up-to-17-kiwis-detained-in-melbourne/QYVSW6WUZVQ62HIWAP5UYOCVNI/

Unfortunately they weren't detained and are now at large.

No doubt their entry cards won't provide contact details in Melbourne ...

I agree what a farce - I think though that once they had set foot on Aussie soil in Sydney and cleared, they are no longer deemed to be international arrivals. If they had flown direct to Melbourne from NZ then that would have been different.

Nevertheless what a farce and was is not the intent of the bubble.

One argument used particularly by those who want to downplay the seriousness of the virus or who want to criticise the steps taken to safeguard people's health is, "the suicide rate is through the roof".
According to the Coroner's Court of Victoria, that has not happened.

A new data report released today by the Coroners Court of Victoria reveals that the number of suicides in the state this year is consistent with the same period for 2019.

The report, which presents an analysis of all Victorian suicides from 1 January 2016 to 26 August 2020, shows that there have been 466 suicides this year, compared to 468 suicides this time last year.
