In my view, the problem is not Trump, but that sufficient Americans voted for him to get elected. What happens to the Republican Party after this election will depend on the election results. If the Republicans lose badly, they are likely to change tack to become less extreme, but if they win, or only lose by a small margin, they are likely to push further towards white supremacy and hard right views.
Note that I mean the overall results, not just the presidential vote. If a lot of representatives and senators lose their seats, the party is likely to reassess their direction, but if not a lot do, change is unlikely, even if they lose the presidency. They are might nominate a candidate with a bit more ability next time, even if he panders to the same views.
