In my view, the problem is not Trump, but that sufficient Americans voted for him to get elected. What happens to the Republican Party after this election will depend on the election results. If the Republicans lose badly, they are likely to change tack to become less extreme, but if they win, or only lose by a small margin, they are likely to push further towards white supremacy and hard right views.

Note that I mean the overall results, not just the presidential vote. If a lot of representatives and senators lose their seats, the party is likely to reassess their direction, but if not a lot do, change is unlikely, even if they lose the presidency. They are might nominate a candidate with a bit more ability next time, even if he panders to the same views.

If the Republicans lose control of the Senate the Democrats are likely to use the chance to push through lots of changes the Republicans have frustrated, but which are popular. The USA could suddenly change direction big time and become a lot more progressive, particularly if Kamala Harris becomes President in four years.

Apparently the Republicans are in power in over half of the States, so there may not be much that a Democratic president can do - as President Obama discovered.

Away from the political. A man who doesn't play politics despite being in the middle of it and has the street credibility suggests phase 3 results may be available to see in December 2020.

If that results occurs with the several other vaccines being tested we may of course have a few options. I love scientists .

Dr Anthony Fauci says a Covid-19 vaccine could be available in the United States before the end of the year if proved to be "safe and effective".
The US government scientist told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the limited first doses would go to people according to a set prioritisation – and that it would take "several months into 2021" before it was more widely available.
He added that the vaccine wouldn't replace the need for public health measures to be in place to help protect people from the virus for a considerable time.

Put it this way a country is a bit like a truck comprised of a multitude of different parts and Trumps has been either asleep at the wheel, can't be bothered driving or doesn't actually Know how to drive the truck.

Interesting that Fauci also said the vaccine might not be widely available in a large number of doses until the second quarter of 2021.
People will have to be vaccinated twice a year, so it's a big task.
I read Australia will go from vaccinating about five million people a year to 26 million, twice a year, so 52 million doses.
And the virus will still be circulating, ready to re-emerge.
This is far from over.
