mid 17th century: from Italian quarantina ‘forty days’
My copy of Oxford dates the word to 1609, but the actual practice long predates that. To quote Wikipedia "The word quarantine comes from quarantena, meaning "forty days", used in 14th–15th-century Venetian and designating the period that all ships were required to be isolated before passengers and crew could go ashore during the Black Death plague epidemic; it followed the trentino, or thirty-day isolation period, first imposed in 1347 in the Republic of Ragusa, Dalmatia.

Cause of mystery illness that struck down hundreds in India pinpointed (thenewdaily.com.au)
That may be the cause, but how in the hell has that got in the Water Table or Reservoirs? Bad Environmental "managing", Illegal dumping of chemicals, drains being diverted into Water Catchments/sources etc ? The mind boggles! If that image of the front gate in my previous Bophal Accident link is anything to go by nothing would surprise me with the Hygiene in that country.
I bet the Political upper echelon doesn't get affected, oh no, they'd make sure they had excellent bottled Spring Water from OZ to bath in & consume "Send the ****ty water off to the plebs, Gunga Din"
Another whitewash coming up I fear. "No we don't know who tipped 100 tons of Electroplater's waste in that hole We think the geezer doesn't work here anymore & has gone overseas."
You would not be surprised by this, then. I've been to India, and there is some beautiful country, but the centres of population leave a bit to be desired.

It's evidence that without a timely and co-ordinated Pandemic plan this virus will defeat even the richest Nations in the World . It's probably true to say a different administration would have given a better outcome, but who outside of America can give a definitive description of the Trump phenomenon and it's influence over the American public. It's like watching the mental breakdown of a close relative , disturbing in the extreme, and always in the back of your mind is the thought it could be you. I have a feeling after COVID and Trump, nothing will ever be exactly as we remember it. And that is as viewed from here. Imagine if you were living it, over there.
