When I posted into Coonawarra, Darwin, I flew up early [ had a two day notice, they needed some one in a hurry, the Missus did the removal on her own and came up with the two boys later] I posted in on a Saturday, got settled in the cabin, went to the mess, and two blokes were talking to each other in morse code at the bar. I questioned the Barman, and he told me thay were " spies " from Shoal Bay. Actually linguists who came to Darwin after the Communications centre in Singapore shut down, and the Aus. government built the facility at Shoal Bay. A bit unnerving, but only one of the fascinating aspects of service in Darwin, at that time. I was told service in Darwin was ' different ' . They were correct. Best time of my service.

Being an Articifer in the Engineering branch, we only had close contact with the Engineering Officers. Two of the best , in my experience were a LCDR Emille Dechaineux, son of the Captain that was killed on the Bridge of the Australia during a Kamikazi attack in WW2. And Kev Fanker, Senior Engineer, came up through the ranks, started as a Naval Apprentice . They complemented each other brilliantly. Lcdr. Dechaineux was an old school gentleman, who knew his stuff. The perfect foil between the Engineering branch and the Captain. Leut Fanker was a hands on Senior Engineer who was happiest ferreting around down below, torch in hand, note book in the other. Early in my seatime I was placed I/C of the maintenance of the aft engineroom. Woe & betide me if I missed a defect and ' kevvie' found it. Hard, efficient, and fair, you knew where you stood . He is no longer with us, I've been told. As for the bad, the less said the better.

This **** was the XO of a patrol boat that was run aground on Gabo Island, off Eden, on the south coast of NSW. Fortunately I had been posted DEE [ discharge engagement expired ] at the end of my service. I resigned before my time was up, primarily because I'd had enough, and he was just enough to push me . Best thing I ever did. I must thank him if I see him again. All up, most of the Officers I came across were ok, but the general rule was, the better the Senior NCO, the better the Officer. Any way I ramble.

bob, I'm sure you realise my above comment was TiC.

No? Well of course it was.

Nothing seems to change in any Navy (& not just the navies of the world, where you have the Jobsworths in charge) where you have the Bullied & the Bullies/Competent & the Incompetent, but I don't doubt your assessment of Hossifers isn't correct. I mean, they can't all be ***** or we would be in strife & they would get rumbled very early.

Even HMS Compass Rose had Lt. Bennet (You know the one, "Goodo, Snorkers", that one.

    Re Morse.

My late Uncle & Aunt did that in an endeavour to teach me Morse at that time. Both were licensed Pilots, he with Ansett/ANA on various aircraft the last being the Lockheed Electra & Boeing 727, she had learned to fly years earlier in Tiger Moths.

They'd yack away in my presence, but no I never did pick it up. I got as far as ABC + SOS & that was it. Bloody Loser!

Unc made me a simple Morse code Sender/Key to help, but I reckon I was not a good Pupil. He must have picked up the parts at some Disposals joint in Melbourne. Proper serious gadget it is.

As a matter of fact I still have the Clipsal Morse Key on my Desk dated 1942. I wasn't even aware Clipsal were in existence back then.
Edit. 1920 they were established under the Gerard Family.

The Buzzer has departed this life but the Key still hangs in there.

As history shows Morse was just about obsolete by then.

All good, mate. A walk down memory lane. No one thought Covid would happen back then. Shows how complacent we were, hey?

And they still wanted the messages after they'd "passed through" the mechanic? Corona Virus

[QUOTE=DeeJay;3064682]My daughters boyfriend - originally from Townsville- has been living with us for 12 months now, so they can save up the $$ for a home of their own.
He is a psych nurse who came into contact with a confirmed Covid case on Friday night ( they were confirmed as such on Sunday) so he packed his bags & went into Hotel isolation then. We made enquiries & were advised to get a test - done yesterday at 10AM & were advised by text in 7 hours that we all were negative & referred to this site for advice. (He got tested as negative on Monday also) .

    www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/getting-your-results-covid-19

This is what we read & followed

If you test negative, your doctor or the clinic where you were tested will tell you your result. You can resume your normal activity once you feel well, following the restrictions for your location.

So today, I take the dogs out for a walk, go shopping at Aldi & then Safeway, have a cuppa with the missus etc. Then at 5 o'clock, I get a text saying to expect a phone call, then a call centre guy tells me I have to isolate myself as best as possible from other family members, wear a mask at home & everywhere, get a test, stay at home for 14 days - unless advised otherwise- and there will be random checks whilst I'm self isolating !!!

Talk about shutting the gate after the horse has bolted !!
    Also,
I'm pretty easy to get along with but it irks me when people don't think for themselves.
The discussion about testing went like this.
Him - You need to be tested as soon as possible.
Me. I had the test yesterday & the result was negative.
Him. Test site locations can be found at ( above website)
    Me.
I had the test yesterday & the result was negative.
Him. If you are uncertain of your nearest location call xxxx and we can find it for you
    Me.
I had the test yesterday & the result was negative.
Him. If you test positive, we will advise you and- --- at this point I spoke over him & actually said it for a 4th time.. and it sunk in. Must have been a long day for him.. poor guy.

I know I can still test positive & of course will follow the protocol, it just goes to show that those people who I walked past in the stores who had their noses hanging out above their face masks are pretty stupid, it would only take someone like them in my position to spread the Covid..

    UPDATE..............

It turns out that I didn't " qualify" as a secondary contact as we wondered why my wife & son who all live with me - & were tested in the same car, never heard anymore after the negative result.
Wifey happens to have contacts at our local members office (Hint- his initials are D.A.) & put a rocket under the appropriate arses..
    I now have a clearance letter .

Otherwise I would have self isolated for 14 days for no reason.. As it was I lost 3 days..

    David
