Good on them. I suspect the "new" "catsarsetrophe" is just around the corner anyway IMHO & we will always need to be 110% prepared at all times & keep up with what is happening around the globe & react pretty bloody quickly..

We have a multi billion new hospital, recently opened, but isn't a lot of good if there aren't enough beds & there may not be. Two Helipads notwithstanding. (why 2 ?) Don't know. One is certainly marked out as the EMS pad but the other who knows? Rich pollies??

Australia does not have a CDC like the US of A or most of the other countries.
Ama (Doctor union has been pushing the government to establish one but not been successful

I think about two years ago we had a agency similar to CDC but later abolished...

And this explains the discrepancies of covid 19 strategies between states. And frankly, quite third-world

Am I the only one who believes this may be the kick in the arse that makes them rethink that idea. Just like the Bushfires rethink they had to have.

    We'll see.

I find it frustrating to hear whoever the spokesperson of the moment is get up and say it'll be alright, we are prepared. And then not give a detailed description on what those preparations are. OK , early in the piece having too much info could frighten the horses, but not giving some idea of what they have done to prepare leaves one to think that the powers to be don't have much of an idea what to do, besides wait and see. That creates doubt , and speculation, a breeding ground for all types of wacky theories on social media, and some mainstream media. I do think leadership has been lacking, especially early in the piece.

Very good article showing how earlier action prevents the higher rates of infection that can and will overwhelm the hospital systems . Trick is to slow rate of expansion of infections. Worth a read

    From article
There were also an estimated flu-related 808,129 hospitalizations, for a rate of 1.8%. Assume a Covid-19 outbreak of similar size in the U.S., multiply the death and hospitalization estimates by five or 10, and you get some really scary numbers: 300,000 to 600,000 deaths, and 4 million to 8 million hospitalizations in a country that has 924,107 staffed hospital beds. Multiply by 40 and, well, forget about it. Also, death rates would go higher if the hospital system is overwhelmed, as happened in the Chinese province of Hubei where Covid-19’s spread began and seems to be happening in Iran now. That’s one reason that slowing the spread is important even if it turns out the disease
    Cant be stopped.

The AMA are asking for a CDC. A certain leader of a large Nation has blamed their CDC for his less than helpful approach to the virus problem. Can't say any more, but will post in CA.

EDIT. This was requested in 2017.

Yes, but it was the USA's CDC that completely stuffed up and is the proximate cause of their expanding outbreak:

    • first diagnostic test was faulty and was withdrawn
    • second test worked but either in short supply or overly restricted access
    • they prevented the States from using the test to check for community transmission (e.g., had to have been in Wuhan etc - does that sound at all familiar?), so it spread unchecked

I'm a New York Times subscriber and the NYT has been scathing about the CDC.

The White House Pandemic team was fired in 2018 to cut costs. [ see Snopes fact check on CA.]

Rather than cause panic in our less than sophisticated community here, we are going to have a personal hygiene blitz to reduce TB here, noone here is scared of TB, but prevent one, prevent the other
