Can someone explain to me the importance of 'bacterial hand sanitiser' in combatting a virus?

No, that's all been cleaned out so they're starting to expand the take .... there were lots of hand towels earlier in the week, now that's all gone. Suddenly all the dishwashing liquid is gone. And so on.

Hell! Makes it a bit difficult for the Stores to plan on what stock to hold then. A hit & miss grocery list.

Home Delivery slots are becoming quite difficult to obtain but seems to depend on when one requires it.

Coronavirus isn’t just like the flu, but it’s only really very dangerous to the elderly or the already unwell. Quite a lot of people in their 80s will die, but most of the rest of us will probably be okay.

If you’re in your 70s and you get Coronavirus, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

If you’re in your 60s and you have a heart attack, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

If you’re in your 50s and need bowel cancer surgery, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

If you’re in your 40s and have a bad car accident, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

If you’re in your 30s and have terrible pre-eclampsia as a complication of pregnancy, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

If you’re in your 20s and have a bad reaction to a party drug, you’ve got a really good chance of survival. If I’ve got a bed for you.

I have 7 beds equipped with life support machines. We have a plan to increase to about 25. Getting more isn’t a matter or more equipment or more money, that bit is easy. There are not enough skilled staff, even if we all work double shifts every day for six months (and we probably will).

If 50% of my city gets infected, that’s 75,000 people. If 5% of them need life support (which is the estimate), that’s 3750 people. For 25 beds.

And then I might not have a bed for you.

So it’s up to you to flatten the curve. Wash your hands. Stay home.

The numbers may be somewhat different in Australia, and at least it is probably a lot easier here to move patients to another hospital to handle local peaks, but this is almost certainly a rough description of the situation in this country. If we do not manage to spread the epidemic out over a long period, a lot of people are going to die unnecessarily, and not just from Covid-19. It might be very unlikely that it is you, but it is almost certain to include some people you value.
You know I don't think that is really helping. People are stressed out enough without adding to it. People should think twice before posting doom and gloom. I have children who are fully briefed on what to do to stay as safe as they are going to be. I hate to think what your ill thought out post would do to their confidence, let alone their young children. Please think before you post this stuff.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Yes, but that isn't why places have bacterial wash at front of house. They have it as a placebo.

    You didn't answer the question.

If it kills bacteria it probably inactivates viruses.

Exactly! This thread is a waste of time. Information is available from Government health websites. Go to them for info and advice.

Agreed, although I have to say that the only thing stressing me is mum's soup. She contributed 10 times more to this county than those here who think she should be dead, and I believe she should be able to eat.

Back to your post.. this whole thing needs to be taken in the spirit you imply. We will get through this.
