I'm not convinced that China's figures can be trusted on this. They don't want to 'Lose Face' in these, or any, worldly matters. Anyone who believes the 'Official Numbers' coming out of China is naive.

The US has only a vague idea how many cases they have, and the number of deaths is grossly undercounted, as is shown by excess deaths figures, co their CFR is meaningless. The US has good medical infrastructure in some respects, but it has little excess capacity. One result of the US medical system that is still to show is a large rise in personal bankruptcies as those successfully treated (and the families of those unsuccessfully treated) face six digit medical bills despite insurance (most of the 30% without insurance will not benefit at all from the medical infrastructure!).

These bankruptcies will probably not start even until well into 2021, when all credit options run out, and will lead to a lot of business failures and forced sales of housing, with all the implications of these.

The situation in Australia will be bad enough as government support runs out early next year and the businesses propped up by it fail - all in a short period of time, but the situation in the US will be far worse with medical bills and ongoing high infection levels - even with a change of government in January, it will take well into the second half of next year to bring infection under control, even with the best efforts and best luck!

Fears of a second wave in the Northeast

States across the Northeast are witnessing a troubling rise in cases, in what could be the beginning of the anticipated second wave of the virus — a concerning prospect and a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.

The region was devastated by the virus in the spring and was then held up as a model of infection control by summer. But the hard-won gains are eroding.

Boston has halted plans to bring children back to school as cases climb precariously. New case clusters are emerging in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

In New York City, the largest resurgence of the virus since it was the epicenter of the pandemic in the spring has sparked fears that the second wave has already begun. The number of new cases recently surpassed 400 per day for the first time since June, and new restrictions that shutter nonessential businesses and schools have gone into effect in areas of Brooklyn and Queens.

That has drawn significant backlash in Orthodox Jewish areas, which are facing unwelcome scrutiny over whether the virus is spreading because some people are crowding together in synagogues and reluctant to embrace public health practices.

There may be a number of reasons for the uptick in cases. The weather has turned colder, forcing people indoors. Students have returned to schools and college campuses, and Northeasterners, who were among the first to take the virus seriously, may simply be growing weary after months of social distancing and wearing masks.

Is that like the UK suddenly discovering recently it had failed to count 16,000 deaths?
I trust the Chinese figures more than the UK or US figures.
