Put this in Walrus, but it should be here.
On average, 2,500 Americans are dying each day from the disease. Every 30 seconds, a family like the Carters loses someone.
Last week, the nation recorded more deaths in a single day than in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which was previously the country's deadliest day in modern history.
"We built a monument for 9/11. We would have to build a monument every day for the last two weeks based on the numbers we've been getting in the US," said epidemiologist Gavin Macgregor-Skinner.
"Nobody's building monuments. That's just how colossal the loss of life is."
Mr Macgregor-Skinner is an Australian infectious diseases specialist who has been advising the US Government and agencies on how to handle the pandemic.
He also treats patients and has been on the frontline in nursing homes and hospitals right across the country.
"The numbers we're seeing are mind-boggling," he said.
"The nurses and doctors we talk to everyday, they're just done, they've had enough, it's not going to get any better.
"We've just had Thanksgiving, we're going into the holiday season, we've got Christmas and New Year — things are going to happen, it's going to turn out bad."
Mr Macgregor-Skinner has set up Ebola hospitals in West Africa, covered the tsunami in Banda Aceh in 2004, Bosnia during the war in the 90s, and yet he's never seen anything like this.
"This COVID-19 right now is setting new parameters, it's raising the bar, it's setting challenges that I thought I was professionally prepared for — but we're getting challenged everyday," he said.

NSW cluster rises to 17. Hope it's not the new strain from the UK, bought in by returning citizens. I'm sure it will be handled well by NSW health.
Under guidelines, international crew can be exempt from hotel quarantine and allowed to self-isolate at home or their usual accommodation if they provide NSW Health with their contact details, have not been in contact with a person whose had COVID-19 in the previous 14 days and don't have symptoms.
Dr Chant said the virus had most likely been introduced to the area very recently, as local sewage testing had not shown traces of the virus
Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan said anyone who had arrived in his state having been in NSW from December 11 would need to present for a coronavirus test within the next 24 hours.
"They will then need to return to self-quarantine until a negative test result is confirmed."

The first one was a driver who transported overseas aircrew to hotels, as far as I am aware this has not been linked to the other sixteen on the northern beaches, but my suspicion is that they are all linked. Although it is possible that there were cases hidden in the community.
That first one is genomically distinctive, confirming its origin is from the USA, genomic fingerprinting is still being done for the others.
