So true but unfortunately, bacteria being opportunistic may also cause an infection when a person is under attack from a viral infection - the common cold, a viral infection, can be accompanied with an opportunistic bacterial infection but this does need to be diagnosed.
But the often request by patients to their doctor for antibiotics when diagnosed with a cold or flu is nonsense unless a bacterial infection has also been diagnosed.

Happened to me in Marble Bar. A bit of a cold - runny nose, etc. The symptoms were apparent a few days before Marble Bar. Took Codrol and carried on regardless. I developed a bit of a cough but continued to carry on. By the time we got to Marble Bar I was pretty crook but because I'm a 70 year old I again just carried on. A day or so later my thought processes were crap, I could hardly walk, etc. My wife called an ambulance and I was carted off to the Nursing Station where my temp was 40 deg C. After a couple of Zoom consults it was decided that a ton of panadol to get my temp down and a week of HUMONGOUS antibiotics to deal with the chest infection. The treatment worked and within about six hours I could walk and think again. After the antibiotics I may never need to poo again though....
Mark, that last sentence was entirely supurflous, far more info than I needed. [bigsad][wink11]
I have a 51yo friend who is on the disabled pension who lives with his 78 yo mother who is on the old age pension.
My friend has type 2 diabetes but more importantly has prostate cancer. His mother is extremely frail and has lung problems most likely lung cancer - she is too frail to do a biopsy to confirm.
Neither are vaccinated - not even the very first one - let alone number 4. When quizzed why they have not got them the answer is usually the vaccinations will cause more problems than they solve or the science is still out. I can sort of understand right at the start when there is a lot of uncertainty but not so much now - while people are still dying even with the fourth dose, most even the elderly survive. My uncle is 87 with a few things wrong with him and covid recently went through his nursing home - he got it and so did many others in the home - none died, two went to hospital and the rest just isolated - my uncle at 87 had no symptoms. They all had their 4th vaccination.
I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my friend as I know that if his mother gets it she will die and if he gets it he will most likely die as well. He constantly exposes himself to Covid as he has to use public transport but thankfully has not contracted it at this stage but I am sure he will.
Our discussions have become strained as I always raise the issue - try to be diplomatic but the frustration is setting in and I am becoming more blunt - nothing seems to work. I suspect with their medical preconditions and no vaccinations at all, that they will both succumb to Covid sooner or later.
You can only do so much with people who, for whatever reason will just not listen.

101RRS,
I hear your frustrations, i have a few friends like that. I just avoid the subject all together. Some of my friends think COVID is a hoax by the big companies to sell more drugs, some even say that its the drugs that cause COVID.
Just remember that some people still believe that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around us. I respect their opinions but I will not talk about the subject even if they bring it up. Saying something along the lines of “Let’s talk about something else ‘cause we will never see eye to eye on this” Generally it works although once I had to walk out of his house because he just would not shut up about it. I got up, and said “sorry but i can’t stay as you will not stop talking about Covid even though I have asked you to”. He got the message after that, we are still friends but he never brings up the subject with me.
