Theres a lot of pro/against WA chat here, with a whole lot of underlying agendas...
From my viewpoint, I've always been of the view that we need to live with it, but you've got to understand where we've got to in the last couple of years. The WA economy has been absolutely massive over the last 2 years. Accomodation booked out everywhere, and most retail up to 50% above "normal" levels. To be honest, a lot of professionals, trades & retail are just exhausted, but keep going as we're waiting to fall in to the hole... We take each day as it comes, literally...
I get the family separation thing. We've had 3 out of 4 parents with cancer scares (in NSW) this year. I ducked over to Sydney for 4 days in July to pep up my mum, the day the Bondi breakout started. I got back 2 days before the border shut. We've booked 2 sets of flights at Xmas for 2 years now, one to Sydney, one to Broome. We haven't got to use the Sydney ones yet...
I think a key difference is that people of WA are CHOOSING to step off the cliff of letting it enter our communities. Just about all other states have had it thrust upon them via various scenarios. This is a voluntary leap of faith and there is a large amount of community apprehension.
So much ill feeling on both sides is driven by politics. It's quite sad really...

I'm interested in why you'd say this, since resigning as Deputy CMO he has expressed opinions on a few things that are correct in hindsight - the demonisation of AZ probably slowed Australia's ability to reach full vaccination rates earlier. He is certainly correct in rebuffing the doomsayers that predicted that by Christmas ICU would be overwhelmed if Australia didn't stay locked down longer.
There does seem to have been a concerted campaign against him by a group of more conservative physicians but I'm not sure that that discredits him. I'll admit that he does have forward leaning views and can see how that would make him unpopular in some quarters. The AMA president, Dr Omar Khorshid seems to be less credible in the public arena with his constant hand wringing over every decision a government makes. I can understand his motivations being the head of the doctors union and concerned for their welfare, however if he had his way we'd all still be restricted to kilometers of our home.
Time will tell if Coatsworth's prediction of Omicron being the transition point from pandemic to an endemic disease is correct but the stats coming out of Africa look positive at this stage and there is some rubber in the hospitalisation figures in NSW with many of those in hospital being detected on admission for other reasons. NSW is a long way from panic stations with 148 cases in ICU and a capacity of 3905 beds as well.

My point is, that it does not matter whether it is iron from WA, coal from NSW and Qld or technology from the ACT, they are Australian exports - if WA tried to divert its export to somewhere else, or NSW/Qld tried to export coal to somewhere else that the Feds dont like then the States are overruled - it might be dug up in a particular location, and that State might be able to glean royalities but ultimately the resource is controlled by the Feds not the States.
An example is the Chinese Belts and Roads initiative where capital was going to be imported to Victoria from China - the Victorian Government agreement was stopped dead in its tracks as not being in Australia's interests.
Irrespective of where they are sourced, all exports are Australian not individual State.
Also you gotta love Wikipedia where you got the 46% number from - was back in 2011 in the mining boom. Also it says:
This article has multiple issues.
This article may be unbalanced towards certain viewpoints. (October 2016)
This article needs to be updated.
The reason given is: Economy has changed a lot recently, especially extractive construction. (March 2017)
So if you are going to quote stats - please provide up to date stats and the relevant caveats.
Yes the export of iron ore is important to our economy (why we are not value adding by at least doing the first stage of processing I am not sure) but in GDP terms it is not providing nearly as much as its export value - to quote from your 2011 Wiki article - WA only provides 14% of GDP so puts the exports into perspective.
However - this thread is not about the economy of WA but about Covid, one aspect being that at the moment WA is out of step with the rest of the country. To balance this are the other States on the right track in moving too quickly to 'live' with Covid. My simple view is that WA rules are too draconian and not sustainable in the longer term but likewise I do not see the need for the rush elsewhere to relax everything - certainly many things should have been relaxed but should have been done in a phased fashion, not all at once.
