Yes, the main effect would be a major devaluation of the $A, meaning everything imported would cost a lot more - which translates to a major drop in living standards, which might or might not result in runaway inflation in an attempt to disguise the drop in living standards (see Venezuela after the price of oil dropped!).

But WA would also see serious issues, with the need to replace everything the Commonwealth does, quite apart from the supply of FIFO workers and a a lot of food.

Nick coatsworth talking some sense Dr Nick Coatsworth says 2022 will end the Covid pandemic | news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site

This mornings checkout from the hotel was interesting, a grandma sitting on a couch in reception sneezing and coughing her lungs up whilst clutching a pile of soiled tissues. The family were commenting that she was coughing so much she could hardly breathe. A couple of the family were wearing masks but grandma wasn’t and the receptionist had hers on her chin. Needless to say we tossed the keys at them and hightailed it out of there……
Back over the river for us😀

Of the approx 149000 people employed in the Mining , Mineral & Petroliam industries in WA , approx 60,000 are FIFO and of that roughly about 6000 are FIFO from interstate , do the Math .

Without the WA labour opportunities and markets for food/goods in WA a lot of those in the East would starve
The mining sector would definately NOT collapse because the lack of a few FIFO workers from the East these can be replaced locally or internationally and the real loss would be the poor buggers in the East that depend on the work to pay the bills/live.

West Australia can most definately survive/thrive without the Eastern States IF is has to, Can the Eastern seaboard survive/thrive without the West is more to the point.

There are a couple of manufacturers of equipment we use,in WA,90% of the gear they produce goes out of the state in an Easterly direction.

What WA are doing in relation to Covid is just putting off the inevitable.
