    Rick, WOW THAT is comprehensive!!!!

Does this show that if you were to use for example a 15w40 Rimula x or equiv. in a temperate climate and be gentle on startup etc that there would be negligible difference in engine wear? thereby saving a huge amount of $$$ in oil costs throughout the service life of your engine?

I will probably still go on using 5w40 Synthetics though, as IF something went pearshaped with a CUSTOMERS vehicle, I can in all honesty show the factory specs were adhered to at all times and even surpassed. But MY vehicle, ( If I had a Td5) I would probably give it a go. Maybe.

I use a 15w40 Pennzoil in the Isuzu, and change at 5K with filter. At 460k old this engine uses 1 litre if I let it go to 10,000km OIC, which I only do if travelling due to the time spent running at highway speeds.

yep. Although I'd lean towards Delo 400 or Delvac MX or MX Super, just personal preference. I'd reckon you'd end up with less wear using a dedicated HDEO as the additive package is more robust than a passenger car oil. personally I'd use Delvac 1 (actually I do ) as I've found it's the cheapest full synthetic engine oil I can buy, and it leaves its cousin, Mobil 1 for dead as an overall oil.

Pennzoil LL used to be an excellent oil, (it used a stack of soluble moly, not to be confused with, and far superior to moly disulphide) and probably still is, but these days is merely a re-badged Rimula since Shell bought them out.

    Hi Rick
Delvac1 is what I was thinking of.We are starting to stock it at work for 1 of our trucks.
Should be able to get it a bit cheaper thru work

Delvac 1 might seem expensive per 20L unit but divided by a 10,000km OCI its actually cheaper on a cents per km basis than Delvac MX at 5000km intervals. At a 15,000km OCI its value in cents per km exceeds all other mineral based Diesel Engine oils, except of course the really cheap crap.

Being a tightars3 student (and a nerd), I created an excel doc to automatically work out the cheapest oil per km based on my mileage of 15,000 (or more) per year and Delvac 1 came out on top needing only one change per annum rather than at least three.

.49 cents per km seems good to me

Well I nearly had a coniption when I was told the OCI for the Td5 was 20000ks...having been used to OCI's of 5000 in all of my previous diesels, it was too much to accept. I do it every 10000ks (but it still feels wrong). Though I have to admit that with centrifugal filter as well the "normal" one, at 10000 the oil is still clean whereas my Paj was like liquid coal at 5000.

    Thumbs up TD5 Landrovers

For what it's worth, I have used Penrite HPR5 Diesel oil in my 'Landy' since new....2005 and I 've had absolutely no problem at all.
BUT, I change the oil and ALL filters at 10,000 klms. No ifs no buts !
10,000 klms or before every time.
Some say filters and oils are expensive......Try a complete rebuild of a diesel engine!! That's expensive. It makes sense and it's great insurance to change oils and filters (in a TD5) every 10,000klms.
    Cheers to all.........

my mate who is my service mechanic and his diesel mechanic partener swear blindly by Delo400. he services fleets and has hundreds of vehicles in his portfolio and believes so strongly in that product that he will not put any other product in a vehicle he services. good enough for me

    G'day all.
I've used Castrol Edge 5W30 since it was called "softex" in my 04 TD5 since new. I used to change oil/rotor filter every 5000km and both filters/oil at 10000km. But now I go 10000km and both filters. As others have said, 5000km with synthetics is just throwing money away. Especially if you remove the EGR, My oil is only just discoloured at 10000km. Still not sure about diesel in the oil, she is going in on Monday to have injector seals changed/head checked.
    Regards Robbo
