just to spoil the free speech debate:

Australia does have a right to free speech - it's a common law one - made in 1920 in 'W. & A. McArthur Ltd. v. State of Queensland' (28 CLR 530) as a result of the judgement, which found that without free speech, a whole chunk of the constitution wouldn't work!

so just because it's not in the constitution, doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

As to the cats business - I'm not particularly bothered either way.

Seriously though, feral cats cause havoc with native wildlife, and are an absolute menace. You also won't find a more cruel hunter than a cat or fox - these things kill for sport, not just for food like most predators.

also on the abc a few months ago, a doco on cats... on some of the outback stations the cats have killed off most of the native food and the aboriginals now get their meat by killing the feral cats using a club and some fire...

As a responsible sporting shooter and [roperty owner I can personally attest to the damge that poor little moggies do to the native fauna population. At one properry we went hunting on I saw a stack of feathers from quail, rozellas, baby duck and crested pigeons that would have filled a wool bale at the back of the hay shed from 1 feral cat female.

She unfortunatly fell victim to a well placed 100 grain projectile that sent her to cat nirvana in about 0.00000000001 of a second.

The cruel part is people from the so called "cat lobby", a well oiled and well funded group of do-goodie doers that fight tooth and claw to stop local councils from introducing laws to stop cats in urban areas from killing native wildlife quoting rights etc etc.

I have a number of cat pelts that I have tanned. they make great trout fly bodies and hackles. They have to be good for something else but am yet to find one.

I hope your wife gets over the thread and like Numpty's Missus would be happy to give a few good camp recipes for a range of feral creatures such as pig, goat, camel, rabbit, hare and deer.
