Oh and stripped a RRC down to chassis and shell for parts.

It's amazing what you can do when you actually try. Now I never think I can't do that I think, give it a go if I stuff it up I'll call a mechanic.
I've saved thousands on labour and it's amazing how few tools you actually need.

It's also amazing what you can do when the option is DIY or get rid because you can't justify the labour cost.

If you love it keep it and give it a go !
Me too! For me, it was learn to fix it/modify it myself (incl full engine rebuild) or get rid of it and not replace it. I now do all my work myself. I don't always know how, but i do know how to read a manual and i'm not afraid to ask the AULROians questions .

Not only is this method cheaper, but you understand the workings of it better so you have at least a bit of an idea what to do if something goes wrong when you're miles from anywhere.

And IMHO, getting it done professionally doesn't always mean it's gonna be better. Remember, they see it for a few minutes/hours and make their best judgment. I recently had my carbies diagnosed as the cause of badly running engine. I thought the problem thru, and eventually decided to rebuild the engine. The problem has GONE and i didn't touch the carbies. He wanted $600+ for a carby overhaul, my engine rebuild cost less than that. Oh yeah, another point: i've got eBay and i'm not afraid to use it .

I think i've gone off track i bit... I'll stop now.

I looked after my mates GQ 4.5 diesel for about 1 year. And it does have heaps of grunt but nothing made me happier than to hand it back and get my Defender! The GQ felt like you were driving a huge truck all the time and it just lacked a certain style.

Worst of all everytime I got out of the GQ I felt like a BOGAN

    That's my 2 bits anyway...

well the engine in the disco is in fact as feckered as i thought and not worth a rebuild so.....
after much thought i've decided that i like my landrover too much to go a pootrol and therefore will bite the bullet and build the disco up to be the vehicle i really want
my plan had always been to lift and lock it with an upgraded driveline etc. and down the line when the engine had had it drop something more powerful in. All that this means is that i'll be doing stuff the other way around....engine first other stuff later. so at the moment i have the disco in at LRA awaiting an engine transplant i wanted to drop a 4bd1 in but couldn't go the money at the moment and was advised against it by the mechanic (although i still think i'll do it in a few years time ) instead for the time being i'm having a low k 300tdi put in with a certain amount of pump tweaking etc. to improve the power, i may well think about an intercooler down the line if power is still an issue. i would have prefered to straight swap a 200tdi in but parts are becoming very scarce and expensive for 200's and easier and cheaper to get for 300's so i'll live with the slightly less reliable engine for ease of repair down the track .
i have decided however that after this expense of having an engine put in by a garage i am going to do all work on the truck myself from here on in as a way of learning about my vehicle and to save money i just don't have the facilities or time to learn how to and then to drop a whole engine in and get it running so i'll wear this cost and start from that point . it's also coming back with a 2 1/2 inch body lift all ready to be hardened the heck up after i've saved a bit of cash again i'll be buying front and rear maxidrive lockers, axles and 4.11 CWP's and will be fitting them at home ($4000 cheaper than having LRA do it ) i may well be crying out for advice when i get to that point
    anyways ill keep u posted
