How true, eg have a $5000 Disco spend $4000 on a new motor and what do you end up with, still a $5000 disco!!!

or fit $20,000 of Hifi to the car, blue print and work the motor, fit this and that, spent $30,000 with receipts and then see it advertised for $5,000 in the trading post ads.
Cars unfortunately are a depreciating asset, they never really make you money, they are a necessity. You never win with cars,... only the Dealerships

the middleman needs to eat too

if you have a three way transaction You the car dealer and the person who buys your car from him, you have to expect the value to be split between at least 2 of you and 1 of you at least is paying for at elast 2 of you to get something from the deal.

If you want it all cut out the middle man at least once then you gonna have to do the selling yourself except no real saving as your going to be paying the middle man something when you buy from him and pay 2 of them the seller of the car and the middleman.

Why sell accessories on a car to a middleman, accessories arent listed in red book the vehicle in its primal state is listed, your just throwing cream out the window in selling vehicle with accessories to middleman

I don't understand why you people want to deny the basic laws of market capitalism and expect people to do things for no cost or for free.

Look at real estate for very little effort a no brain BMW driving real state agent will cream between 3 and 6% out of your pocket to sell your house and a auctioner (man with big lungs and loud voice and no morals) will take another 1 to 2% for shouting for no more than 15 minutes and those % on an average modest house of $350,000 is lot of BMW travelling.

We live in a free democratic society you can choose to be ripped off or not be ripped off it all depends on how much your willing to go find your own buyer and negotiate a equitable price for yourself.

I bet when your acting as seller you want to have the top premium price for yourself rather than saying l knock 10% off as l am saving on not paying a middle man

You just need to build one of these like Roversmith did

    Plenty of room then.

I hate car salesmen with a passion

Take your prised polished possession into them, beaming with pride, and they look on it as it was a common tu*d!!

They give you a paltry sum for it and try to make you believe they are "going overboard" and their kids will have to live on vegimite sandwiches.

The two days later, they are flogging you car as a "one in a million" low km, owned by a little old lady that only drove it to church on Sundays. Not only that, they try to sell it at double of what they gave you!

In 2003, we traded our EBII Falcon on a 2002 AUIII. The EBII had 160,000km on it as was in very good condition. Ford gave us $1,200 for it. 5 Days later I saw it in a used car yard with $6,900 on the window. Two days later it was sold..
Just using this as an example , am I missing something? What do you expect? If you want a better price, sell it yaself . How is that the salesman's fault? How is it different to any other sales transaction? Obviously I have been in sales for many years, albeit have never sold cars, but there has been that stigma in other professions. Of course, any business is out to maximise profit and it is up to the consumer to be "aware". And then all of what cartm58 said .

As for what is my Disco worth, well $105k new 2 and a bit years ago. If I wanted to sell it today..................well lets just say YIKES. Double YIKES due to the lovely marked paintwork and a few dints underneath, I know Im better off keeping it for a long time . I've looked at selling it, purely as my business has been only going for 18mths and with a 5th child being added to the family would make things easier, but I wouldnt get what I needed, so it stays...unfortunately ,

    Regards

I think we all understand that the dealership/salesmen all have to earn a living, no problems there.
I'd be the first to admit that it's purely an emotional reaction when a stranger puts a dollar value on your pride and joy, and it's never going to be a favourable dollar value
But knowing this does'nt make it any easier.....

Well, says i, lets take her for a drive while they check out my beloved Disco.
I could'nt fault the 130, apart from the tyres only having half the amount of tread as the spare. When i pointed this out to the salesman, as being odd for a vehicle with only 10 000 kms on it, he pointed out that the spare was new???????? Yeah thanks for that useful info.

Anyway, the true insult was yet to come. Due to the fact that my TD5 has a full service history, 172 000Kms, 2" lift, winchbar, driving lights, roof rack, cargo barrier, snorkel and UHF and has apparently been modified surely not and may even venture off the black stuff It is apparently only worth $12 grand.
The car is in great condition and i've spent many many hours improving it. And if all i'll get for it is 12 grand i'll be spending many more hours and dollars making it even better, because i could'nt afford to buy one as good as it currently is
So the question has to be asked, what is your Disco worth to you?

    Rant over...................bloody salesmen
I paid $8K for my current 1993 Disco V8/auto (Silver) a couple of years ago, I already owned a White 93 Disco when I paid cash for the current Disco (Silver), this Disco (White) was stock except for a Unichip and a 2" lift.
After purchasing the Silver Disco I sold the White Disco for $6K after a while, dropping the price from $8K to $6K.
The Silver Disco had everything on it that I was going to fit to the White Disco, I have Reciepts for $16K for the gear on the Silver Disco fitted by the prev. owner, being:
Late model 4L cross-bolted engine with 3.5 timing cover, dissy, and EFI and single coil, no cats.
Safari Snorkel (modified under bonnet by me)
    Dual Batteries
ARB Winch Bar, side steps/rock sliders and rear ARB bar with tow hitch
    AMV front Bash Plate
    Diff pumpkin protector
OME 2" lift Springs and shocks (Nitrocharger)
ARB front and rear Diff locks/ extra duty compessor
    110 CV joints
    Maxidrive axles and flanges F&R
    4.11 CWP F&R
    135L fuel tank
    Extractors and 2 1/2" exhaust
Poly bushes (seem to work OK)
Wheel arches cut for 35's with Flares
8"x15" Sunraiser wheels and 31x10x15 Muddies
    Bigger Radiator
Aux. wiring with own fuse box with Waeco fridge plug in rear with interir rear lights and 3 cig. lighter power outlets, with anderson plugs for trailer
    Paratus drivers seat
    Cargo barrier with fire extinguisher
Fridge slide/with cupboards and sliding drawers
    Overhead console
    CD player.
    Items fitted by me:
    Bilstein shocks and steering damper
770CC amp starting battery, 120A/H aux battery with Redarc system
    12,000lb winch
    New extractors and exhaust system
    New Coil and leads/plugs
    Nankang Mudstars 33x12.5x15
    Lambswool front seat covers

This modified Disco has had about $18K spent on it by the former owner and myself.
It's worth, it has cost me $10K less the $6K I got for the White disco.
To me its worth is that I have the 4WD that I want and am as happy as a pig in you know what.
What does the Forum think it is worth.
Phill, sell your car to an enthusiast and you will get your true value, don't give them car dealers a smell of your you know what, Regards Frank.

Philwilde, what year is your disco, if its a 99 D2 then i can understand the 12k trade in but for a 2000 up Disco 12k is an insult.
