BBC, what an incredible thread (i know its old). It is fantastic to be able to get a perspective that is positive, factual about these wonderful people. So many times we only hear the bad stuff which hides the fact that these people live in difficult times and yet are still welcoming to strangers such as yourself.

Thanks very much for sharing your life with us, and of course, having a Rover slant to some of the photos

    Stay safe,

    Bloody brilliant mate!

Love this thread - truely captivating. You are the David Attenborough of people!

It certainly puts life into perspective, reading of the way in which other cultures live, laugh and love despite the challenges they face.

And we worry about wether or not we get our morning coffee...

Saturday on the coast..Cape Coast, Ghana

Sunday I took a drive with a workmate back east along the coast to a town called Cape Coast. This piece of Africa has been known in the past as the Gold Coast and the Slave Coast. In turn, the Portuguese, Dutch, and then the English, exercised colonial control.

In exercising their control they established a series of fortifications along the coast. They utilized the dominant culture, the Ashanti, to gather slaves for export.

The road into Cape Coast from Takoradi. Cape Coast is situated 165km west of Accra:

    Looking west:

The local fishing fleet. Not an outboard between them. They net and troll. Their ruined nets litter the beach:

    Views:

The Cape Coast Castle, a World Heritage site, has been around in different hands since the 15th Century. It is one of the largest and oldest slave trade castles in Ghana. It was converted into a castle by the Dutch in 1637.

The entrance on the bottom left hand corner of the photograph was for the male slaves, who were separated from the female slaves. They lived in complete darkness for months on end, living in close to half a metre of human detritus. Those who survived were then 'exported' to the Americas as slaves.

The female dungeons. Apparently a thousand women at a time were held captive in these small rooms - a third didn't survive their stay. Places like these are a very sad reminder of our capacity for cruelty.

The Germans persecuted the Jews for twisted ideological reasons….. slavery was the commercialism of it's time. The $buck has long reined over humanity

Then we had lunch at a local restaurant
This was Red Red & plantains, beans and deep fried plantain bananas; heavy fodder.

and, I had goat’s guts and cassava. It was spicy in a peppery sort of way.

No cutlery, hands were washed in a bowl with some detergent and then right hand only feeding.

More to follow when I get back to a better internet speed.

    Downtown Takoradi on a Sunday

Went for a doddle yesterday. Downtown anywhere in Africa is normally teeming with life...except.....for Ghana on a Sunday.

The place teems with pentecostal churches, trying to win the souls of Ghanaians. I don't think I have been in a more profound christian place....they'll start a meeting at work with a prayer...anyway...each to their own.

I took a walk along the beach then up along the ridge overlooking the harbour and, in testimony to how quiet the day was, I was only accosted twice by adult males trying it on for some money...not a bad day.

Interesting to see this war memorial to the soldiers of the Gold Coast & Royal West African Frontier forces that participated in WW1 & WW2:

The port is behind. Quite a busy place with the gold inland and the rubber and coca plantations. The floating superstructure you can see is an oil exploration platform. It has been having a few issues getting itself into a working order but, when they get going, this place will not know what has hit it...

Ghana has a population exceeding Australia's but, occupying a piece of turf not much larger than Victoria and, they are very commercially oriented:

and..if you hadn't noticed...they drive on the righthand side of the road...need to keep myself alert to that fact!

This is one of the main roads descending down into the Market Circle and, on any other day but Sunday, it is choc-a-bloc with cars and people. Testimony to the 'pulling power' of church on a Sunday...and I mean...all day. I must get some photos to illustrate the churches bulging with people.

Goats, goats everywhere in developing countries...in Ghana they seem to have only this 'dwarf' species...cute...and they taste pretty good.

and here you can see some pretty good street design. That is a pretty clever combination of drainage and road divide:

I have a 7-8hr drive tomorrow, out into the bush and heading up-country to the mine site I am eventually to take over as the contract manager to. I'll see if I have the time to stop and take photos of some of the everyday traffic accidents that form part of everyday driving in this part of the world.
