Time goes on. I am busy where I am here in northern Mozambique but, I still keep in contact with people from Somalia, Afghanistan, and even Timor Leste.

Watching with great interest what is currently happening in Somalia:

This will displace Al Shabaab but the conflict & insecurity will continue for some time.

According to my mates up there, there is some significant development and change looming in Mogadishu:

I did see the worst of it there, and it is now heartening to hear of some positive change. Here in Mozambique, I even have linkages of how things are going in Mogadishu through some of the Somalis that are here in Pemba...some are related to the Somalis I used to work with in Mogadishu.

Being away from Somalia, Tarin Kowt, and Timor I do reflect on the experiences and the people that are still there. One day, I hope to be able to go back and see these people again. Doing so, would be a life event.

This is an Italian Restaurant down in the old part of Pemba, down near the port. It has been bought and renovated to support the accommodation and dining needs of ENI (Italian oil company).





I am currently spending a good deal of time here in Pemba, chasing land, office, and accommodation...so I am all over the place. Here are some photos looking over the more informal parts of the town. According to the WHO Pemba, 10 yrs ago, had a popn of 40K..now it is 220K....and still growing. These informal and densely populated parts of the town are where most of the population is. Living wherever they can.








and down there in the distance, on Pemba Beach is the Rani Resort Pemba Beach Hotel...Zero Star accom, overlooking Five Star.

Was Google Earthing the other day and compared my latitude here in Pemba, Mozambique with east coast Australia, same latitude as the Lockhart River on Cape York...right up there., and becoming more tropical.

Driving around today, I have seen this one before but took the opportunity today to snap some shots. The owner re-built it and it is powered by a Nissan 2.7 diesel....wadda bewdy:





These are the central markets in town, this is the clothing, electrical, and plastics section...plenty of bling:







Then around into the food section. One side, because it is all the longer-life bulk, such as rice, potatoes, cassava etc is sold out of the more formal, lockable stores:




On the other side, alongside the road, are the fresh veges, this stuff is carried in and out every day:



Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, with market stalls down both sides, especially the shoe stalls:





Driving around the coast road to the port. Pemba used to be a sleepy little place with the occasional container vessel and fishing boats:






This is the traditional community that has populated the low ground on the peninsula, a big fishing community with a significant number of Muslims. Mozambique is one of the most multicultural and peaceful free places I have been.





One of the Mosques....and there is a Catholic Church there within the same community.



Here was a game of soccer I stopped to watch. How many of us would volunteer to play on a pitch like this...or our kids? These blokes are so skillful and committed to their game and...guess what? LOL...I did not see one of them make a 'dive'....I am sure you can see why:




These shots were taken before the game...the yellow team did win..2-0.



They insisted on the photographer getting in for one as well.

This recovery happened today just under the verandah of the restaurant where myself and some friends were having lunch.

The Toyota had backed in to enable the launch of the jet-ski and....he got stuck, he was there for about an hour and he just kept spinning deeper in the sand AND, the tide was coming in.

Then, down backs a Land Rover, and pulls him out...as always!




and, in the mean time, there were humpback whales spouting and breaching the water further out....and lunch was...Oh NO...not prawns again!!

a book I tells ya!! A Book!.

Found a really rare vehicle tonight...unfortunately. my flash was not working and I had to use hi-beam to light it up.

A Volvo L3304/PV Jeep 903, they were built for the Swedish Army from 1963 and there were less than 200 made..this one is No 119. This vehicle was imported from Sweden into Mozambique in the late 90's and has been here ever since...what a cracker of a car!! Anyone ever seen one before?

This vehicle had me enthralled. The gentlemen who owns it works over in Zambia but resides here in Pemba, Mozambique...next time he is back...Dec...he said we can go for a drive.

This has to be the largest and most colourful moth I have ever seen on my porch this afternoon.

Interesting effect with the pattern. It is certainly staring at you.
