    Dinner last night....

Does anyone know how to put a 'Wide Load' sign on a motorbike?

Was sitting in a bar yesterday PM and the marlin they'd ordered for dinner turned up.

Hey BBC, you obviously would have a lot of good ideas about routes through Africa, which are being discussed in the 'Overlanders Handbook' thread in General Chat. Any chance of a comment on the proposed map route shown on the last page? Your thoughts would be appreciated if you care to contribute.

    Things are changing.....

Flew into Maputo yesterday, and heading out into the bush early Sat AM to join with my wife and her family, for the ceremony to celebrate the life of her father.

He passed away 12mths ago and there is to be a weekend long celebration of his life by his offspring. Beside the local family, my wife's siblings have returned from Spain, Germany, and Russia...it'll be a biggun.

Then, me and the Love&Kisses are travelling back to Australia. For the fact that my eldest is turning me into...as she terms it....a Grandfarter!

And, in the meantime, I have a Letter of Offer and I am currently in action transitioning to a better option. Still in Mozambique.

    Back again...

    Dear all,
Saw this driving in Maputo this PM. How much timber have you ever seen packed into a Landy?

It has been a while…I departed Mozambique 14 May with my Love&Kisses and travelled back to firstly, Melbourne. Then, the next day, my wife and I had to travel to Caboolture. To face up to the fact that we are now, both of us, Grandparents…or, as my beloved daughter has termed me….a Grandfarter. Here is the evidence:

A week up there, getting used to handing babies back to their parents then, back to cold old Melbourne…brrrrrrr..I did get the S2A of the blocks and, she started first go. Then had some relaxing time with the wife and the kids. Drove around the ‘Nongs’ some, down to the south coast, through the mountains, and back along the Great Ocean Rd to Point Lonsdale…remembering all of our first years in Australia when the wife and the kids migrated across…great memories.

Then, I had a bit of a wait….as I had to wait 30 days from departing Mozambique. As I climbed on the aircraft departing Maputo, I emailed my Gen Mngr in Tanzania, and informed him that I was resigning. After 14mths with the mob I was with, I had become sick of the time it took for them to make belated decisions…and I’d been finding out some, of their liquidity problems. In the last two months I had been courted by three other companies…one wanted me to go to Brazil and set up their business there…in anticipation of the World Cup…one of the companies that is currently the detention contractor off-shore for the Aust Govt. Then, the other two companies want me to come and start up their businesses in Mozambique…Mozambique has been my aim for a while. SO, I have taken up an offer with one of the two…..it is a security service company, that is still in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kenya, and Sudan…The company is owned by a couple of people with S….A….S backgrounds and, I was approached by their CEO.

In another one of those ‘small world’ stories the CEO’s parents went to my parents’ wedding and vice versa….he grew up in the same small country town of Kyogle…as I did. The last time we saw each other was when he was 18 and I was 16. He and the owner were looking for an ex-military type that knew Mozambique…and is fluent in Pork&Cheese…then, through connects, he found out I was there already…and, they made an approach. So, after a week in Dubai doing company induction, I am now back in Mozambique and in the process of gaining incorporation and licensing of this new company. There is a lot of looming opportunity here….AND, unfortunately, the country is also currently experiencing some conflict, in the centre of the country, from one side of the politics in Mozambique, RENAMO….the other side of the post-colonial conflict that was fought for 16yrs between them, and the current government, of FRELIMO.

RENAMO have become sidelined over time, they are becoming increasingly politically irrelevant, and are now sticking out their mitts (with AK47’s in them) and are seeking a ‘part of the pie’. They have resorted to their previous guerrilla tactics, have armed some of their supporters and are currently trying to stop traffic movement up and down the only road heading north and south, and have tried striking against the rail system that is exporting the coal of Rio and Vale out of Tete Province. It is causing concern with the foreign investors but, hopefully FRELIMO can treat it as it is..criminal activity, and allow their police and legal system to deal with it….we can only wait and see….a luta continua.

Truthfully though, I'd rather be dealing with the politics here, than in Australia....e pa!

Anyway, that is my update. I am still here.

I hear the area around Gorongoza is a bit of a no-go at the moment.

I have some contacts for porra-speaking ex-mil types, so pop me a PM if you need people.
