On paper the BMW seems to stand up fairly well against the others...
Depending on the model of BMW i'm looking at the 1995-1997 years. And I chucked in some other car stats as well. 8.0-8.4/10 appears to be alright to me. See below.

In anycase, my original post was about what to look for when looking at these cars. I am looking at the other brands but they simply are not appealing to me.

F4, thanks for you input on the E30 models... but I don't think I like the look of those. I much prefer the E36 series, but it is interesting to know that these were built outside of germany. That Ebay one you pointed out had pretty high K's! 300,000! The 316's I've looked at so far have had 100-150,000. I might look at some of the 6cylinder 3 series cars too. 316i's seem to be a fairly uncommon car, and being underpowered that might start to annoy me later on. I think I'm going to have to test drive more cars to get a good idea.

Your mind is quite obviously made up, so buy one then

If its running costs and a small car wanted, N13 pulsar, hell even a hyundai excel, if its a bigger car, you can;t go past an EBon with LPG

But people dont solely buy cars due to pragmatic reasoning, so just buy the car you want............................that way everyone can taunt you when the beemer craps its knickers

Yes my mind is made up, What I was originally asking for in this thread was what to look for when inspecting the cars.

That's a pretty big claim. You can't leave it there. Got a justification?

I was not suggesting you get a 300,000km car, just showing you a good alternative in small bmws. E36's still look modern today. Get one, I have never owned a car that has the same quality felling as bmw's. They are not disposable cars, they are built to be maintained.

    Stirlsilver,

I guess you have thought of the complete running costs etc, and I wish you well in obtaining a good , well maintained Beamer.

The maintenance can mostly be done by yourself, and with the chain driven cam engines, there is mostly just plugs, oil, filters and cooling system components to look after.

I still stand by what I said earlier though, BE THOROUGH looking for and purchasing/ inspecting one, then you won't be out of pocket/ dissappointed.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
