The answer to your question has already been given.

    Emissions.

Thats why even the most neanderthal of vehicles now have ecu's.

You may think that ECU's break down and crash every time they are turned on.... but in reality Microsoft have had nothing to do with them.

BTW, when I broke a TD5 radiator at Archer River Roadhouse in the middle of Cape York.... a new one turned up overnight. Mt Isa is more able to get parts in than Archer River Roadhouse.

    I'll step in:

The point you all keep dodging is why make something more complicated than it needs to be.
The countries we live in have legislated that vehicles should meet emission and safety standards...the Defender is just hanging in there..if the legislation was retrospective then the Puma Defender would be the only Defender on or off the road.

Still havent answered the question on the plus $50,000 difference between the vehicles either.
Forgive me I must be a little thick.

The new Defender costs about $50,000. When did a new Defender ever cost $0.

My basic non ECU Disco cost $48,000 when new 13 years ago.

Perhaps Tata will bring us back a decent defender. I can only hope.
Only if we move to India (see comment above).

    This whole debate is "academic".

I'm not sure of how much, but I recall when the County was introduced (call it a 110 if you like) it was horrendously expensive for its time.

    One reason?
What about a couple of other reasons.....

    Perceived reliability?
Service centre in any town with a population of 2000 or more?

    Supposedly cheaper parts?

    Service centres that actually listen?

Salesmen who know their vehicles (try Blacklocks Wodonga - quote "Defenders are not made any more")

    (Note: Perceived and Supposedly)

And "bigger engines more suitable to highway miles and overtaking" - V8 Discos?

Get your point though - Land Rover Head Office are s**t

You are all right of course, I am sure time will prove that. I base my opinion on my life experience and I would like to think its fairly comprehensive. As for not answering questions re mechanical problems. I have several times. I will repeat it again though. If something mechanical fails in a well maintained simple vehicle there is usually a work around or at least you are aware what the problem is.
As for my opinion being ill informed and wrong according to all of the post tdi defender owners. Money talks, thats why the new defender will not have a place in my driveway. If what passes for a defender now is due to legislative requirements than they should have let the defender die a natural death while it still had its reputation. That is my opinion in relation to the new defenders as requested in the original post.
I do find it very interesting that one of the above posters mentions that selling his County was the most regretted decision he made in the signature. I also find the prices of used 110's from the mid 80's to be very interesting when compared with their rivals. Guess other people are as ill informed as me.

Really. I think the Defender has never been more capable as what it is now.

I also think the mid 80's 110s were popular as there was an engine that had more grunt in it and it was more reliable than the Tdi.

I don't think that capability has been affected one iota. Engines are one thing, 4wd system and it's operation is the same.
