Alternator - Drove home with 4 batteries. Turned out power steering pump had failed and killed the alternator.

All in all mechanical failures have been my biggest issues. With the old bomb category it was more surprising that they ran. One of them you could not put new parts in or it wouldn't run. I had to rumage through the parts others had replaced. All the new bits I bought for it I ended up giving away.
All electrical issues have been a broken wire or alternator has died and battery didn't have enough juice to get me home. Never an ecu and sensors have always given warning so you could still do a couple of thousand k's if needed.

Was driving through a nearby town in the Rangie, when all of a sudden the engine redlines and won't come down. Nowhere to pull over but straddle the meduim strip between 2 lanes of hectic traffic both sides.
No sooner had I cut the ignition, and stepped out of the car, and right there behind me are the boys in blue, lights flashing, putting out cones and yelling at me "You can't stop there!!!!"
After explaining that it's probably just a problem in the throttle linkage he insisted that the RAA, or tow vehicle be called.
I told him it was no problem, and I'd have it running again in no time.
"You can't do that, you don't know what you're doing....."
The look of sarcasm, which turned to disbelief, was priceless, as I whipped out the air cleaner box, and with the pointy nose pliers put a new hook on the throttle return spring, then connected it all back in about 30 seconds.
Then the absolutely stunned look on his face as I hopped in, fired it up and drove away with a friendly wave and a "Thank You", leaving him standing in the middle of the road.![]()
only two flat tyres have stopped me in the last 9 yrs of owning discos,and they were easily fixed.have had bfg's for last 4 yrs & never had a flat tyre.
abs unit rattled loose in the simpson so did the ecu above the passengers footwell,washer bottle tried to fall out up the cape....both easily fixed & didnt stop the vehicle.
hope i havent put the mocker on myself

Some ****e must have stripped the thread on the stud for the belt tensioner pulley previously and did a poor repair. Had just replaced the serpentine belt and was going down the road for test drive to see if the squeeking had finally abate got 5kms all smiles. Then battery light comes on and water temp suddenly rises pull over to find tensioner sitting in fan blades and both belts shredded. Try to see if i can limp home but temp would just keep rising as the water pump is no longer turning. Racq towed to landrover mechanic and helicoil with key insert used to fix thread. Everything seems fine now after 10000 kms since but still nervous as to wether i've blown the head gasket.
Land Rover has given me no trouble in two years.
Holden Rodeo had the clutch slave cylinder fail but still managed to drive it home about 5kms and then to the mechanic another 5kms on the Monday. Fixed under warranty.
Nissan Pintara had the clutch slave cylinder die too. Flat bedded home and I managed to pull it off and have it recoed on a Sunday for $12.
( 1 )Blown Head gasket .Motor cut out on a busy freeway in Brisbane When cooled started again and drove to a safe park then flatbeded to my mechanic
( 2 ) Electrical .Some wire rubbed and shorted through the firewall.Flatbeded to my mechanic again Took auto elect.4 hours to find it....costly.
( 3 ) Oil in transfer Case just decided to leave the box on the Nullabor,noticed whine stopped then had to keep adding oil to nearest Landy mechanic at Perth.
stressing trip believe me..still to be fixed..complete transfer case checkover at disco automotive Perth.My disco has taken me all over oz and at just under 300000 she really has done me proud.I have so much aftermarket gear on that to get it all on a newie is a big job indeed that why I'm sticky with the Old girl (1996 update)

My D1, after 240K, put a con rod through the block and although technically a mechanical failure but was more down to the idiot behind the wheel.
PS, this was the only time my D1 ever leaked oil.
My D2, well the less said the better but no tow trucks required.
My wife’s D3 is proving to be one of the most reliable vehicles, 4x4 or otherwise, we have ever had.
03 RR, this was without question the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned.Heaps of problems and nearly all mechanical. Tow truck required twice, once for a front diff failure and once for a transmission failure.
08 RR, 30k on the clock and not a problem so far.
