    stranded poll

Following on from this thread where we are 'discussing' the benefits or lack thereof of engine management systems.
    On a serious note

I am interested in knowing what has put you on a tow truck or stranded. Doesn't have to be specific to landrovers. Was it a mechanical or an electrical failure.

Spat the serpentine belt 10km from Pt Augusta once.

Stranded till I fitted the new belt in the back!

P.S> I suggest adding "Electronic" to the list... As they are different beasts...

    ECU failure - Electronic

    Fuel Pump failure (TD5 etc) = Electro-Mechanical

    Oil pump failure = Mechnical

    Battery Failure = Electrical

    Oh yeah,

Old discovery siezed a RHF wheel bearing at 110km/h throwing the vehicle into oncoming lane...

That required a tow truck from Victoria (Ballarat) to Adelaide $3000.00

Broke front diff, transfer case, Rear driveshaft, front driveshaft....

Trying to keep it simple. If it was an electronic bit that broke its electronic. Vise versa. Doesnt help that i voted for the wrong one. Guess thats what happens at quarter to two in the morning.

I don't think it is appropriate to put anything down - I've never been towed for a breakdown in fifty years of driving, although I have carried out roadside repairs on occasion - I think the last time for a real show stopper (broken clutch plate in the middle of tth Simpson) was in 1966. Although an air leak on the suction fuel line in 1995 stopped us for ten minutes.

Like Mike says, you need 3 options: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic
Also needs to be multiple selections as I'm sure some have had more than one.

Disco 300Tdi Manual - Continual issues with ABS sensor failures, went through 5 of them, but this never disabled the vehicle. Only two times needed towing were: 1) broken half shaft and CV, (2) vehicle rolled several times and was a write it off, so doesn't count.
Disco Td5 Auto - One Mechanical problem in 5 years - front drive shaft destroyed transmission casing, vehicle still managed to drive 4km at walking pace in to Erldunda, then was flatbedded back to Alice. CDL and transmission wiring harness were destroyed but it still let me drive it that far. One electronic problem when immobilise would not release system until fault codes were cleared from BCU, still don't know why, but that's what it took to get it going again. Original battery died one morning it was a little over 3 years old.
Defender 300Tdi - Nothing to date apart.
Defender TDCi - Nothing to date

Never been stranded in a Landie over 25 years despite travelling in the Outback most of that time.
Even seized the LT95 in my 1971 Range Rover in 50 degree heat at Marla Bore when the roads were all dirt
fiddled with the gear shifter until I got 3rd and 4th and drove it like that for 6 months moving from 3rd low to 4th high.
Havent used any electronic ones though.
