    Can I vote 12 times? That is the number of tows I can recall due to electronic problems. Eight of them occurred with my late model Falcon ute.

    Fire Due to Electrical Failure at Cape York

    Corrugation Road caused Starter circuitray ( possibly a Faulty Relay ) to send live charge to Starter Motor whilst vehilcle was being driven and this overheated the Coil and cought fire. Luckily I had fire blanket and an extinguisher etc.

    Patrol dumped it's clutch fluid onto the road while going down Bells Line of Road towing an empty car trailer... very hard to downshift while towing on a steep hill with no clutch!

    Patrol had 4 wheelnuts pull the studs through the hub...

    Patrol had starter motor die a week after we bought it...

    Fairmont had starter motor die the same week!

    Fairmont had fuel pump die.

    Been driving 22 years, 11 of them in 3 LRs and have never been stranded. Have done 1.5 laps of Oz in Landys which have all been greater than 11 years old. Problems yes, but always able to get home.

    Never called the RACQ despite having membership all that time.

    D1- Dry Solder joint in ECu, when it wamredd up, car would stop. Coopers fixed for $40.

    D2: Had a crook battery, made Gearbox ECU go into Limp mode.


    All in Sydney Suburbs, Never been stuck in the bush!

    I was in a short wheel base cruiser up the cape in 86 and we sheared off all the wheel studs on the front drivers side, due to the corrugations we couldnt feel it happening, so we just set up camp on the roadside for a fortnight until the parts arrived on the weekly bus, most boring 2 weeks of my life.

    RRC towed from outside of Carnarvon due to blown heater hose leading to cooked motor. (My fault, lack of maintenance).

    Tdi Disco towed from outside of Dalwallinu due to seized bearing on power steering pump (belt also drives water pump) - got back to Perth by bodgying a temporary belt in the end.

    Td5 Defender towed when the motor nearly ran away due to cracked head letting fuel into sump.

    All mechanical.

    Hmmm, I'd say mostly mechanical,

    D1 - split water tank - cooked engine (stranded on the beach & v.v.v.v. expensive)

    D2
    Oil in the harness (not a stranding, but close to it)
    Fuel pump (x2)
    Front drive shaft
    Rear fuel lines (not a stranding, but v. close to it)
    Front Diff (blown up!)

    Mechanical has stopped me everytime - nearly.

    Electrical has caused some inconveniences, but I've always got home.

    Vehicle is a 200tDi Defender

    Alternator - forever getting mud into the contacts and causing no charge - always drove home - sometimes on battery pack though

    Transfer case - melted all (and I mean all) of the gears in the NT, managed to limp into Larrimah in low range. Only time the old girl has ever been on the back of a truck in over 500k.

    Rear axles - finished the spline off in the ACT, got home as a front wheel drive

    Front and rear propshafts - actually had this happen three times now in 5 years - uni-joints fialing. Continued driving on the other end each time.

    Front diff - destroyed it in Wagga - actually got home, albeit very very slowly

    Over-heating - a number of times, usual solution is to rip the thermostat out and continue on.

    Front wheel bearings - destroyed themselves near Newcastle - couldn't continue after that one. Had them rebuilt the next morning in time for our Stockton Beach run.

    I'm sure there have been others but the only thing out of everything that has ever stopped me from getting where I needed to go (and needing to be towed) was the transfer case. And even then with a day or two I reckon I could've limped it into Katherine if I had too.
