I hadn't considered this aspect of helping up until now. Mainly because it isn't helping. Asking/telling someone to spell properly doesn't help them to spell properly. Its sort of like saying to some random person in the street - "Hey, you're fat and ugly - go sort it before I have to endure your presence any longer" and then claiming its trying to help. Thats pretty much what this thread is about.
Its not a gentle dig such as what Ron may do, its a harp that runs for 24 pages in this particular case.
Even if you break down the language used in the thread you will see that there is a a level of victimisation, bullying or whatever you want to call it through what is perceived to be a power imbalance, but nobody will front up and admit to it. That is basically the essence of the problem here. Where is the power imbalance... "We" are trying to help "You". Some of this thread is about bullying under the cloak of improving spelling and it may not be intentional, but its there.
Another aspect of why people get upset, and there are clearly members on "Our" forum who are genuinely upset about the running and progress of this thread, is that it is a publically humiliating and victimising thread to those that cant spell and so reflects a socially inept approach by some of those that can spell.

I seem to remember somewhere in the archives of this thread I suggested that many people on the forum have English as a second or third Language, and are possibly even living in another country. However your use of written English is very good and I would suggest that if/when you became aware of an "error in English" you would attempt to not make the same mistake again.
There are other people on this and other forums, who have English as a first language yet have poor spelling and grammar, are aware of it and make no attempt to improve or correct it. Then these people who have made comprehension so difficult for the rest of us are infuriated that we, (who do try to use English correctly,) dare comment about their writings and want us banned.

Like some people I to get annoyed with poor spelling, bad grammar, poor syntax and SMSese. However, while I am highly educated and have worked for 35 years where my writing skills are critiqued by others, and as a senior manager I have to do the same, I accept that I am not perfect.
So, only people who are perfect should be permitted to critique others on the forum. Those who whinge the most should take the time to go back over their own posts - even in this thread and they will note they are not perfect, full of slang, poor syntax and incorrect punctuation and even the occasional spelling mistake.
Most of us do try to do the right thing - but it is a forum - not a letter to the chief executive. Lighten up - get off your high horse. However for us lesser mortals - we do need to lift the quality a little - but lets not spend too much time worrying about it - life is too short.

PS - I do not care if there are errors in this - I know you get the message - it is reasonably readable - not too many spelling mistakes. The communication process has worked.
And who is to say they are perfect & would know the difference anyway?Quote:

Txt speak annoys the hell out of me.
I just think some of the spell checkers on here need just relax . why don't you go and join a " I can spell better than you " forum FFS !!!
I am a poor speller who did not finish High School, however whilst a few typos' slip past I at least hit spell check so that most of my poor spelling mistakes are corrected, that is just how I feel about posting on forums (I personally would be embarrassed to have numerous spelling errors). I consider it to be a courtesy however I don't think it is the end of the world for those who can't be bothered, I usually just have a small laugh at their expense, it is not worth getting worked up over. :)

It has most probably already been mentioned, but you can get an Australian Dictionary as an add-on to Firefox. Works well.
If one uses Firefox, the spelling errors are highlighted immediately so there is no reason to send the message until they are fixed. However, the spell checker will not pick up correctly spelled but incorrectly used words, e.g., "vane" instead of "vain" in an earlier post.
There is also a big difference between typos (everyone makes them, e.g., "teh" instead of "the") and really bad spelling.
