The vast majority of the time the spelling does not detract that much. I will take good advice from anyone even if it is not spelt well. (BTW the spell checker wants me to change spelt to slept or smelt)

You have to be there at the right time to see the threads or post's removed and members banned for such an offence after all it just causes problems for members an example was made at MacTalk were it got out of hand with a few members picking on other members in the forums and via pm's about the bad spelling and grammer so the admin's decided to deleted such post's and ban any member picking on another member about there spelling and grammer.

After all we are just here to seek and help other's with there Land Rover problems or enjoy there tails of there adventures off the beaten track or listen about what they have achived in life.

Like Ron I too care about poor spelling, grammar and syntax, while I can read the post it becomes a chore to read as the errors jump off the screen at me.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I had an expectation that most search AULRO using the AULRO search function rather than Google, but it was tongue in cheek comment.

AS the Gorky kid who wore red Glasses who grew up to some one with a preachment to live in some of the not so nice places on this planet and survive. I have little time for those who use there usually only skill as a wordsmith to belittle others in a vane attempt to make them selves look superior. All it produces is anger and frustration even to the point of “ I wish that spelling Nazi was standing in front of me”

Having said that I don’t have much time for TXT speak etc

I also speak quite well 3 other languages and have a survival level of 4 others. None of which I write well.

But the use of words which don't make sense makes a post less than intelligible.

Isn't Gorky a park in Moscow (and the title of a book)? And I don't know what "preachment" is in this context nor can I even work out what it means.

I think you wrote in another thread that you write reports as part of your job. Do you have someone else proofread them?

I think you'll find I haven't corrected any of your spelling errors in any of your other posts. As you are no doubt well aware, your spelling is less than good but still better than some on here.

You might think I'm a spelling nazi (a most offensive term) but I correct very few posts.

Have you ever considered the possibility that when someone encourages you to use reasonably standard spelling and grammar, they are helping you to do just that?
Most of the comments about poor spelling are about the sort of spelling that makes it hard to read the post.
If you post something important or interesting, I will probably be keen to read it.
If it is an important technical point, I want to be reasonably sure that I have read it correctly.
If it is just something of general interest, there is a limit to how hard I am prepared to work to read it.
Spelling and grammar that create a risk that your message will be misunderstood or ignored are a problem.

Most of the corrections of trivial errors are fairly amusing. One example that springs to mind is the one where I'm sure the poster meant that in his underpowered vehicle he was "cursing all day at 90kmh". He meant that that he was "cruising" but his original word was also probably pretty apt.

I have seen plenty of posts where people have had a bit of a dig at someone's age, weight, hair colour, lack of hair, drinking habits, gender, choice of vehicle and a dozen other things. Those jokes seems to be generally quite well received and people tend not to take the comments personally.

What is it about some people that they think the subject of spelling if off-limits?

If an overweight person can accept a bit of a joke about whether he should try out the chocolate mugcake recipe, why can't someone who has created a mental picture of two batteries fighting (duel/dual batteries) accept the comment in the same way?

Why can't some people accept that we are trying to help you communicate effectively or are just having a gentle dig?

It seems to some that good spelling and grammar have gone the same way as good manners.

What I can't understand is why some others, who acknowledge they are poor spellers for what ever reason, are so unwilling to learn the Language correctly. It is never too late to learn new things and that includes correct use of the English Language.

Personally I would not remain a member of a forum that rewarded poor spelling by artificial prohibitions or bans for commenting about it. It may say something about the forum owner's own spelling and grammar.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
