The reason why i have some tools in my Disco

I was at the car wash today getting the mud off from the weekend at the
Landrover gathering.Anyway i had the high pressure gun going washing the passenger door when i heard a strange noise

It was coming from the front of the Disco.Had a quick look and my winch was on by itself

I quickly dropped the high pressure rinse and popped the hood.I had to then grab a spanner from the back and disconnect the battery.This probably took all up one minute from the time i heard it.Im glad i leave the wich disengaged otherwise it could have done a bit of damage

My question is how could it have turned on by itself? I may have accidentally sprayed the box where the solonoid is?

Could this have shorted it out? I may have to run a switch inside the cabin which cuts the power.Any ideas how? Havent tried re connecting it yet.Might wait for tomorrow to do that.

most probably a solenoid failure due to mud and water. Had it happen to me a while back. By the time I had hit the isolator it had stalled the motor!

Is yours wireless remote?

Im glad i left it free spooled.I do for this sort of reason.I would hate to see the damage it would have done if it wasnt.

And yeah it has wireless remote with it.How did you run a switch for yours?

In stead of switching the solenoid signal wire I have an isolating switch on the main power cable, just in case the solenoid fails on a hard pull.
I suspect the wireless system got wet on yours, as it's unusual for a solenoid to play up when it gets wet

If it's wireless, i have heard about the wireless winches somehow picking up the signal from another winch being used close by, i would say this would be very unlikely though

On the other hand.. reading the title..... I couldn't help thinking half the cars around me on the way home in the piddling rain tonight all had tools in them too

For piece of mind you should isolate it any way, just in case some bogan lowlife decides to free spool it and hook it onto on of your panels then short it out to rip your vehicle apart whilst it's parked unattended. I've heard it has happened with paper clips

Yeah i think thats what i will do.For now i will just leave the positive disconnected.

The 3 pin controllers are easy to hotwire. The 5 pin units can be done..... but good luck without frying your hotwires.

To run an isolation switch, you can also switch the solinoid earth wire which carrys minimal current. The fat leads carry a lot of power and you probably dont really want any voltage drops on them.
