People who spend their working life or leisure time in Land Rovers will now be able to use one to get to their own funeral.
It is being made possible by Land Rover enthusiasts Jacqui and John Dewar who have launched a business called Alpha 4x4 Funerals.
Mrs Dewar came up with the idea she came face-to-face with the prospect of her own death during treatment for cancer. She had explored the options for her funeral but was disappointed at the lack of choice relating specifically to Land Rovers.
Now she has recovered from illness and has set up a business with her husband, using a specially built silver Land Rover Defender hearse and matching silver limousine.
Explaining her idea, she said: "A Land Rover is a big part of many people's lives – either for work or for leisure. For many it's a 'faithful old friend' and something that reflects a person's interests and passions. And it can play a big part at their funeral too.
"Having a Land Rover funeral is a unique and very special way for the family to add an individual touch and 'celebrate' that person's life publicly."
Mrs Dewar, who was born in Felthorpe and raised in and around Norwich, lived in Beccles and worked for funeral director Arthur Jary & Sons in Gorleston until three years ago. Then she moved to Bedfordshire to run a busy branch of a funeral firm but later was diagnosed with cancer and spent a year recovering.
Mr and Mrs Dewar, who between them have 25 years' experience of funeral directing, are offering transport rather than a full funeral service at this stage. They hope that their unusual hearse will be called on by funeral directors all over the UK and even on the Continent when they have special requests for transport to funeral services.
