What is the ettiquette of Land Rover waving?

1. Do Discoveries only wave at Discoveries, Defenders only wave at Defenders etc or are we all part of the same species and wave to each other? I kind of get the impression that Defenders are not likely to welcome a wave from a Disco.

2. What constitutes a "wave". Is it a subtle acknowledgement via a slight lift of the finger (index). Is anything more than that too geeky?

3. Does one only wave to another out on the open road, or can you do it in suburbia?

I've tried to wave to all sorts of Landies, but only ever get responses from Series, Defender and early Rangie drivers - so kind of given up acknowledging anything else. The other day a Discovery 1 driver waved at me first and I felt guilty that he probably didn't see my hurried, surprised, late response. Poor bloke probably just wanted a friend.
