Well, after a few hours, I've finally written very detailed instructions and got all the files collated, ready to be burnt onto DVD and distributed to those who have ordered their own unit. Hopefully they make sense! I'll try and send out discs to those who've sent me an address via PM tomorrow - with a bit of luck you might get them by the weekend!

Well, after testing and comparing the new 500MHz unit to the original 372MHz unit, I'm not overly impressed with it. Whilst I'm also not disappointed, as it works fine, it simply doesn't work much - if any - better than the slower unit.
This also means no bluetooth, and I don't think the windscreen bracket is as good as the slower unit either.
Most surprising is the fact that when doing a side-by-side comparison in the car, the faster unit takes about 3-5 minutes to get a satellite fix. The slower unit normally gets a fix within 1 minute.
Ultimately, I'd give the faster unit a miss, and go for the slower unit.
Has anyone worked out how to "auto start" the bluetooth application?

You're a trooper Ranga.
More strength to your arm.
May the wind be at your back ...... etc, etc.
Ive been messing around with the 500mhz model, have loaded up the new menu but having trouble with the resident flash part as i cant seem to find the keyboard it seems to be missing at the bottom of the screen where the older one would be.It did pop up once but then it disapeared again. Is there somewhere else to access it as everything is still in chinese?
Thanks Mat.
Hi Ranga,
I'm sure that you've had a very restful w/eand are ready for another "curve ball".
As with the 500MHz unit, I realise that you can't give an absolute reply, without testing, but I'm interested in the 7" screen unit.
DealExtreme: $177.00 7.0" Touchscreen 400MHz CPU Windows CE 5.0 GPS Navigator w/ Bluetooth Handsfree + 2GB Maps SD
I see that it uses a different processor (which complicates things) and lists a max SD card size of 4GB (which may be a deal-breaker), but do you think that I would be able to get enough help on the "net" to set this up as you have the 5" unit?
TIA,
Peter
Some good questions there. First of all, I'm pretty certain it won't take the larger SDHC cards. 4GB was the maximum the original SD cards came out in, and even then they're pretty hard to find as they were quickly superseded by the SDHC cards. 4GB should be still plenty big enough to do what you wantm just harder to find, hence more expensive and obviously smaller than the possible 16GB (and rising) of a SDHC card.
Now, onto the main question. This appears to have a totally different menu system, so would take a fair bit of effort and finger crossing to get working with my files. Even then, it might not work and worst case you might ven end up "bricking" it. Despite this, it's still running Windows CE 5, which is the same operating system as the units I deal with. The speed of the CPU is irrelevant. Without having one to tinker with, I can't help to much. I was given info how to mod the ones I deal with before I even acquired one, so not sure where you might find info on them.
FWIW, I'm willing to have a crack, but as they say, all care taken, no responsibility".![]()
Please see my edited first post in this thread about chaning conditions on providing modded units or files.
Gotcha.
