FWIW: Did a trip to the Cape with Cooper H/T on the P38 and 2 original Michelin M+S from the P38 on the camper (LR wheels) with 3 spare ratty whatevers on the LR spare rims (thankfully not needed). The Michelins have about 30% left (after 100,00km on the P38). The Coopers have done 35k km and are about 50% worn. We eased through a lot of claggy mud on the PDR (just past Archer River) and they held up well.

However, they are very hard walled and the ride over the gravel and corrugations - even with pressures lowered to 28psi rear (normally 38) and 22psi front (normally 28-29) was less than ordinary. Broken bitumen around Bris. at normal pressures is equally harsh and always has been.

Seriously contemplating BFG A/T for next set.

Phew......... That sounds a bit better. I couldn't find any BFG A/T's in an 18 inch tyre, I could only find the GG A/Ts or the Pirelli, and I would rather drive a flat BFG than a Pirelli, my opinion of course, I've had some bad experiences with Pirellis. They do do a good calender thought!!

I have had GG AT2 on my D3 for 18 months and 40,000K later they have heaps of tread left. Very happy with them, this is mainly local streets and highway driving, and a bit of gravel and sand.

They do seem to go the distance, just don't inflate the tyre to the 34 or 36 PSI recommended. I have always run my tyres at about 38 psi and the least I have got of any set on any car (Celica, Liberty, Falcon, Forester, Liberty) is 60,000k's.

Interesting thread, given I'm going to be one of a number of D4 owners who're going to be in the market for 18s when the new rims arrive from the UK in January. On my short list at present are the GG AT2s and the Cooper LTZs (or maybe the BFGs, but road noise worries me here) - so any further experience with these (or other options in 18s) would be very welcome reading.

I've been running GG AT2s for 11 months now and I find them "great" ... I do a fair bit of driving up around the Vic high country and they haven't let me down yet. Slightly noisier than the previous Goodyear "silent armours" but a lot better on the road for grip and handling - I also put a lot of miles on them driving down to the Gippsland area to visit my folks and so far so good.

Oldsalt - road noise is a critical factor in my decision making re tyres. I love the almost complete silence of the D4, even with the Pirelli's I'm currently running, and will be really loathe to surrender that - even though I know this might run head-on into the whole purpose of going to the 18" rims (to get sturdier AT tyre options). So, when I see you saying "slightly noisier" I start to worry - can I press you for any more info on this one? Or anyone else out there who's used the 18" GGs?

I can state the GG AT2's is a decent tyre for daily use. They are marginally noiser than the GY Wranglers and as they wear they appear a bit noiser but still very acceptable IMHO. I have never had my tyres rebalanced from new and they have travelled 49,000km mainly on bitumen. There is a still around 60% tread depth left. As a heavy duty off road tyre I can't really compare as I run a set of 17" STT's.

This *was* an issue in the UK until recently, there's only been 1 AT tyre available in 19" and that was the Pirelli ATR and even then it's only available in 255/55/19, the Discovery size. We've had a few 20" options mainly from Cooper, but I don't want a 20" tyre for offroad work, they'll end up getting pinched on the sidewall.

As I said earlier in this thread, I went for a set of the 19" Pirelli ATR's earlier this year for my RRS (despite them being a 55 profile when the RRS wears a 50) and have found them to be superb. I've done a fair few rocky tracks and they've come out unscathed, they're also very good in anything up to full mud, where they suffer, but that's to be expected really. I use my car for work on cross country pipelines so it does see offroad use quite frequently for both work and pleasure.

For me, they were a bloody expensive tyre at £800 for a set of 4, but that's been more than repaid with the wear rate. I've done 22,000 miles on them so far and they're only 40% worn, I expect to get at least 35,000 miles out of them before having to change and compared to the 12,000 I got from standard road tyres I'm very happy with that. They're no louder than normal road tyres and have had a minimal effect on economy.

Recently, General released the 'new' AT tyre to replace the AT2 and the 19" is the main focus at the moment. Seems to be a lot cheaper than the Pirelli (£600ish for a set of 4), but with a tradeoff of slight noise (only from what I've read about them, not from personal experience). From my perspective it's great, as I don't need to have a smaller wheel or separate set of wheels. If you're running 19" on your D4 then getting a set of the GG AT's brought over might be a solution, not having to buy a new set of 18" wheels pays for a fair number of tyres I'd have thought...
