Yes that was one of my biggest concerns too. Dust was everywhere except inside :).
Parts of the Dev (and Telegraph) roads were like fog after oncoming cars.


I used the "recycling air" function often to pressurise the cabin after every passing car. Its a shame it auto turns off after 15mins, would be nice to have a more permanent setting for these conditions.


Next time we go we will definitely try to avoid the crowds during school hols, so that should reduce the dust significantly (from others at least).

Hold the button in for 3-5 secs (I think) and it will stay on recycle until manually changed.

This doesn't pressurise the cabin, only stops the entry of outside (dusty) air through the normal air intake, but is useful in keeping out dust from passing vehicles.

Pressurising occurs when excess fresh air is drawn by running the fan at higher speed to prevent dusty air from being drawn in through any gaps in seals around the rear of the vehicle, causing air to instead be expelled through those gaps.

The filter in the Hevac does a fantastic job anyway of keeping dust out of the cabin...

Mine was loaded when they pulled it out Tuesday from the post Melrose trip..

Problem is by running the fan at high speeds your sucking in much more dust to your pollen filter. I'd just be leaving it on recycled air where possible but not stressing about turning the fan right up, that little fan isn't going to create bugger all pressurisation compared to your car driving at 60kph pushing air in your seals. Let the triple sealed doors do their job! 98% of the dust inside a d3/d4 would get into it when you stop and open the doors.

You're very wrong on this one!

More dust gets in on recirculate as the external pressure you mention helps the dust get in.

Incoming air is quite significant and enough to provide the minutely small pressure differential required to keep dust out.. We're talking 1-2 psi is all that's needed above outside pressure.

In recirculate mode the body vents in the panels are coming inwards allowing dust ingress.

I'm not suggesting turning up the fan when there's dust from other vehicles, only that some positive pressure is required to keep out trailing dust caused by the vehicle itself, which may require the fan to be run harder than what the climate control system provides to maintain temperature. For dust from passing vehicles I use recirculate temporarily rather than clog the cabin filter and will often also lift off the throttle to avoid unnecessarily clogging the engine air filter. The cabin fan has no affect in keeping dust out when on recirculate so it doesn't get touched.
