There was talk a while ago about a LRO or similar mag doing a head to head between a Disco 4 and Defender...did that happen?

Also, its good to see that we are all so different. Some people love changing gears and wouldnt ever change that while their arms still worked no matter how smooth or how many gears and flappy things an auto box had (I am one of those). Some people love the feel of a truck like chassis and axle set up (like on D1,D2, Defender...and I am one of those). Some people like character in spades (....and I am one of those). Against that there are people who prefer quiet, ultra comfortable, car like characteristics in their 4wd's but still like competent off roaders. Each to their own, but there have been one or two comments on this site over time to the effect that if people in Defenders COULD do so, they would opt for a D4. I think that misses the point entirely and assumes far too much about Defender owners (and D2 owners for that matter).

I'll admit to being pleasantly surprised, Rocmics D3 did the best out of the 4 of us, at least until mark showed up in his county
People who deny that D3/D4 has exceptional ability off-road are simply talking out of their ass, same as people who dismiss Defender owners as being too busy picking food out of their beards to get with the times
Each to their own, it's still better than a toynissan

Couldn't agree more Muppet. I actually wanted to get a Defender when I bought the D3, but that was idea was nixed by two factors - 1) I drove the D3 and 2) my wife looked at the Defender after the D3.

That said, I am very happy with the D3 and its capabilities. The reason some people don't give them much credit is they way they look and also becasue the large majority that have been sold are basically Toorak tractors, there awesome abilities are not used.

The trip that Muppet and I did on the weekend had a steep uphill with a nice step near the top. The D1, Muppet's D2 and a P38 had to winched, the D3 just cruised up. I'd like to say it was the driver, but the reality is it was the superior (that is newer and improved compared to the D2) traction control on my vehicle. Needless to say I still have the permagrin.

For all of that capability, if Mark's County had been with us for that hill (with locker and bigger wheels), it would have cruised up just as easily as the D3.

All of these vehicles are capable, fun to drive; it comes down to what suits the individual and their circumstances.
