    Setting up a D4 for a 2.5t Caravan

    Hi all,

Thought I would start my own thread as I really have a lot of questions. I have been searching this forum for a while now and whilst it's been great I feel like I need to ask a lot of questions at once.

We have a '14 D4 TDv6, white of course. It has the usual upgraded entertainment pack etc all that crap, otherwise pretty much standard. We bought the Disco as we intend on buying a caravan to take our two girls on holidays with, who are both under the age of 5 :/

So, I would like help in setting it up to tow a van. Reason I want help is that the first time the Disco will be towing a van is when I drive the van away from the seller's house/shop. I have never towed a caravan before, neither has the disco. So essentially I don't really get a trial run, things need to be right before hand. I shall explain in numbers. If you can help with anything please number your response accordingly

    1. We are purchasing a Jayco 18-20 foot range. Mind made up on the brand so please don't bring that into it. We will be purchasing one of those converter modules as Jayco's have LED lights and I know this is a problem. These are from a website I've come across here. All correct on number 1?

    2. We still don't know whether our van will be 'touring' (standard height), or 'outback' (higher). This purchase factor will determine whether we have a standard HR tongue going into the standard LR receiver, or if we will purchase the new Mitch Hitch (which I have been following Peteren's job on). Our Disco is a tight fit in our garage and this hitch will need to be removed I believe for the car to fit, so it's important it's easily removable. All ok?

    3. We already have a Red-arc tow pro that has been installed by a auto-elec. However after reading the EBC thread it is causing me to lose sleep believing the auto elec would definitely have wired it to the brake switch. Although I'm a mechanic by trade I am by no means electrically minded whatsoever. Any advice here....

    4. To assist in the ease of removal/installation of the tow hitch I will be flogging off the white trailer plug for a Anderson plug, I believe this will also charge the battery on the van, correct? Should I replace the LR black 7 pin plug, why/why not?

    5. What plug does a standard Jayco come with? If I upgrade the Disco to a flat 12 pin, will the Jayco need the same? If so, what's the point of upgrading to a 12 pin?

If there is anything else needed prior to towing a van please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

    Scott.

I would definately get the Tow Pro instal checked,Sniegys way is the ONLY way.He is a Land Rover dealer spanner man,he has posted from Land Rover Tech bulletins. His way is the only way you wont do damage to sensative electronics.
Definately fit a Drivesafe dual battery system,Tims system isnt bettered anywhere.Easy to get it installed if you cant, its all cut to length/ready to fit.The instructions via email link are so easy to follow, even covers how to remove and replace trim items as need be.
    ENJOY

    Thanks Andy,

The dual battery system was already on the shopping list. Wife wants a car fridge so that was going to be put in shortly. From all reports on here I could probably handle that install I'm guessing. It reads quite easy on here.

Issue with getting the TowPro install checked is who do I get to do it? The guy who fitted it convinced me he had LR experience, that's why we got him to do it. Turns out that appears just fluff to win the job.

    Scott.

    P.s. I'm in Newcastle.

    PS.
There was a wiring system to suit LEDs listed in the markets. It was listed for a Defender, reading it tells me it should work on a D4.
I bought a secondhand Linear Designs unit from a member, havent towed with it yet, seems to work in the shed. The problem with these is is the exsessive amount of cable at the tow hitch.

I did my D4 one no problem, just took my time.Previously fitted a very similar system from Tim on my D2,and some of his controlers on a RR Classic and a Mitsa****ty Trytoo.
Its easy gear to instal if you understand what you are doing.

    ... YES

A Mitch Hitch is not a easy thing to fit or take off and the suppliers used to recommend that you replace the bolt and neoprene bush every time you take it off. A Mitch Hitch is a good thing, we have one on the D3 for towing our 2.5 ton off road Jayco van, wouldn't be without it for going off road or even dirt road's. The D4 hitch is better than the D3, but only marginally.

    3. We already have a Red-arc tow pro that has been installed by a auto-elec. Nope, other than asking the installer how he installed it or getting it checked.

    4. To assist in the ease of removal/installation of the tow hitch I will be flogging off the white trailer plug for a Anderson plug, I believe this will also charge the battery on the van, correct? Should I replace the LR black 7 pin plug, why/why not?

You can leave the black LR plug if you like, have the Anderson plug fitted above the 12 pin flat plug it all fits in easy next to the Mitch Hitch. I used to use the Anderson plug to try and charge the house battery's, but decided a better way was to fit solar panels on the roof of the van that charge the battery's even when driving, much better alround. I use the Anderson plug to provide power to a 240v inverter fitted next to the 3-way fridge to provide decent 240v power so the fridge stays cold when driving.

    5. What plug does a standard Jacyo come with? If I upgrade the Disco to a flat 12 pin, will the Jayco need the same? If so, what's the point of upgrading to a 12 pin?

Jayco's always have 12 pin flats, a standard Disco 7 pin just won't do the job, as far as I know you don't really have a choice on that

If there is anything else needed prior to towing a van please let me know.

Good removable extendable towing mirrors and if the budget allows a caravan fitted rear view camera, get it wired when you get the 12 pin fitted.

    Thanks in advance.

    Scott.
Hope that helps Scott and as Landy Andy said a good dual battery system is a good thing.
    Cheers,
    Terry

I have a 2014 RRS and have just purchased a 2013 19 jayco starcraft. For the led lights they work ok, just need a 21w resister to at least one indicator circuit, such as a normal indicator bulb. Car will then 'recognise' the van. Lights will work ok without this but car won't sense it and reversing sensors etc will keep working. Jayco have the 12 pin plug and they can supply a pdf of their required wiring setup. We had esc retrofitted to the van which in the end caused 3 dedicated supply circuits all through a redarc volt sensing isolator, esc, fridge, house battery. These were on the top fatter pins. The bottom 7 pins we left as bog stock.

    Scott,

I looked for the new wiring for the Tow Pro in the LHR storage space to help me sleep easier.

I aimed to identify two key points made in Sniegy's post, which I felt should be easy to see if done. That is the cut brown wire & connection of new variable voltage wire to that wire. Plus the splicing in of the red wire (brake light). I found the correct connections but the installer had done it behind the left tail light instead of in the storage space (wires run directly from storage space to behind tail light before going to trailer plug).Setting up a D4 for a 2.5t Caravan

There is a couple of photos in the main thread that are really useful to identify if the correct things have happened. Plus Andrew's own more recent thread has good photos too.

Also, I am another Traxide DBS fan who did it himself without any previous experience.

    Cheers,
    Scott
