Sorry if i caused offence. I wasn't saying you didn't - more highlighting it for the OP as the original interest was for the V8.
Apparently the owner of that disco got it chipped, which may have contributed to that particular failure. That said, there are known issues with the diesels, though as eevo said issues are not limited to land rover.

I've owned my 2011 V8 since new. Everyone thinks the HSE is the top of the range - its not - the V8 is (or more accurately, was)
Specification:
5.0 JLR V8 - amazing motor, truly wonderful.
absolutely everything you could add on to a D4 was standard, including
- extended (windsor?) leather everywhere
- rear electronic diff lock (utterly amazing off-road)
- triple moon-roof
- 3-zone A/C (independently controlled rear AC)
- heated steering wheel, windscreen and wing mirrors
- superb 14 speaker Harmon Kardon 780W stereo - with 2 subwoofers as standard - best I've had in any car including Benz's, Beamers and Audi's
- screens in headrests (for rear seat occupants)
- heated seats not only in front but in outboard rear seats also
- 20" wheels (yeah, I know..)
- surround camera system (useful off-road)
- bi-xenon hi/low beams
- memory on power seats (driver)
pro's
- sounds great - proper exhaust note
- amazing off-the line acceleration for city driving
- tow's anything
- climb's anything
- supremely comfortable to use in any circumstances
con's
- can't ford water like the diesel's can (not that I do this anyway) as (i) it's petrol (ii) issues with snorkel due to dual air-intake setup
- fuel consumption is a bit higher (average 14l/100kms, get consistent 11's on highway, wife gets consistent 16's as she drives it like an MX5)
- OEM 20's are massively limiting off-road and/especially on sand
- fuel tank way too small (same issue for all Disco's)
my only mods:
- 18" Compomotive wheels + BFG K02's - bulletproof and climbs over or through anything
- GOE EAS rods - affords me amazing clearance
- GOE compressor plate (insurance policy, still nu-scratched!)
- LED spotlights on custom bracket bolted to radiator support through the grille (removable)
- replace secondary muffler for a 3-chamber open design (so i could hear a note when off-road - other than having to look at the tach, I had NO idea what the engine was doing..)
i'd recommend this car even though everyone goes for the TD/SDV6's which is fair enough. If petrol was at $1.75/litre again i may have a different opinion.
I seriously test drove a LC200-series VX and Sahara a few weeks ago. Great cars but (a) I can't justify paying the "toyota tax" even though their resale values are high (b) comparatively primitive tech (only exception being KDSS) (c) feels like an absolute barge on-road
I'm thinking about selling mine for a lower-mile car. Love it but. Definitely staying with a Disco (4) - not a fan of the 5's.
Peace.
Brian
Brian,
Great review and I agree with everything you wrote. Just one more "con" to add to the list: availability! They are so nice that they are really hard to find. For instance, I just checked and 3 in Qld and 1 in WA at the moment on Carsales.
Mine will be up on Carsales before end of year

I can't say anything about the petrol Tojo but my boy has/had (haven't seen him in ages :-(( ) a 200 V8 diesel and it took Toyota 3 years to fix the transmission which couldn't pull the thing out of his driveway after a week sitting there while he was on site.
His argument was his old RR would start and drive immediately after 3 months of not moving.... theirs was it was a "hi-tech" box which I would have thought would mean it was better but not in their minds.....
Then the engine oil burning issue, about 3 ltrs between Perth and Exmouth towing his boat. But before towing the boat suspension had to have a 5 grand fix......
After many denials and consumer affairs intervention they had it in their workshop for 3 months transplanting a new transmission and fixing the engine. Now this bit is good. For the 3 months they gave him a 3ltr Pajero to tow the boat and it cost Toyota 3 grand a month apparently on a dealer new car/used car deal all billed to them.
Now ain't that a lovely story...... the Tojo fanatics on ExplorOz and others have shouted me down as a "troll" for daring to say that about their dream. HAHAHAHA

Chose the one you enjoy driving, both have faults, both have advantages. I have a friend with a 200 Petrol, spent a fortune modifiing it including a 270l fuel tank! It dropped the transmission under warranty but was off the road for 3 months waiting for a new box from TOYOTA.......he still lives it though like we love our Land rovers .
Both trucks are very capable off road, It's a case of horses for courses.
Oh and one of them is far more comfortable than the other, No guesses which one that is
You only get one shot at life, Aim well
