Snorkels are designed to be watertight as they do not use the original internal plumbing. The issue is just with the RAI which is just an external fitting with nothing new inside.
Maybe a silly idea, but if the snorkel inlet tract (Safari or otherwise) was not watertight it would make sense that it isnt airtight either.
Therefore should be a relatively simple test to block the snorkel upper intake, engine should stall. If it doesn’t, then there’s a leak somewhere?
I’ve got a Safari snorkel (came with the car) appears pretty well sealed through the inner guard through to the air box. Mind you I’ve not been in water deep enough to test for water tightness.![]()

I was thinking that too. Out of curiosity I browsed the installation instructions for the Safari and noticed that a flexible tube ran from the RAI where it attaches to the side opening up to the engine air intake. I thought looking at that that it may be watertight.

I priced up a 4" stainless snorkel they look great in my opinion.
Around $900 fitted, not went ahead yet as they are flat out till February.
I am struggling with the factory intake on my early 3. The later ones sit a lot closer and don’t look like they were built by a work Experience kid
